We had to include a classic on our list. While the novel isn't entirely about gambling, it takes you back in time and puts you into the shoes of a WWII soldier who's trying to piece his life together. Being a gifted musician, with aspirations to advance his career, he has to work a night-shift at a casino to make ends meet.
Drugs, theft, passion, and gambling: this novel by Nelson Algren has it all. No wonder it won the 1950's National Book Award.
Gambling 102
This gambling guide by Michael Shackleford is more of an intermediate course on various tactics and strategies. It's aimed at people who are already familiar with the basics and want a deeper dive into the mathematical analysis of winning more at casinos.
The book talks about 19 casino games, deconstructing them so that you can see the essence and understand how to win them. Among all the games described in the book, sports betting and Three Card Poker get special treatment.
This publication was a long-awaited treat for “Wizard of Odds” fans when it first came out.
The Frugal Gambler
Talking about frugal gambling might seem counterintuitive after our previous entry. Still, we have to present to you all the sides of the game. While some gamblers sit in presidential suites and go on to wager $100,000 on one hand of poker, some others make smart and savvy decisions about their entertainment.
The goal is to gain an edge against the house. In this book, you'll learn everything about using coupons and getting more comps from flights and at casinos. Jean Scott's “Frugal Gambler” is all about less shiny and more calculated steps to rip as many benefits as you can.

A winning hand? Combined changes to gambling industry could end Canada’s drift
In a landmark announcement, the federal government has signalled the birth of a modern sports betting industry in Canada. New legislation has the potential to unlock the billions in gaming revenue currently being generated in the “grey market”.
What you need to know
- After a decade of calls for gaming law reform, the federal government has proposed to decriminalize single event sport betting which, if passed, would permit provinces and territories to regulate and license single event sport betting in Canada.
- The Ontario Government has announced plans to launch a regulated online gaming/gambling marketplace. Under these plans, a newly formed subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario would be granted authority to manage and regulate online gaming sites operated by private third parties.
- The combined effect of decriminalization and online regulation provides an unprecedented opportunity for gaming industry stakeholders to potentially unlock the billions in “grey market” gaming revenue currently being generated through facilitating a legal and regulated online gaming marketplace for all types of single event sports betting in Ontario.
Current regime
Currently, Canadians may only legally wager on the outcome of a sporting event by way of parlay betting, which involves placing a bet on the outcome of multiple sporting events at once. Despite numerous calls for reform by gaming industry stakeholders over the past decade, single event sports betting in Canada has remained prohibited under Section 207(4)(b) of the Criminal Code. 1 This has led to the creation of an enormous “grey market” for single event bookmaking, with nearly $10 billion wagered annually in Canada 2 and an additional $4 billion 3 wagered annually through offshore online sports wagering websites and applications. Notwithstanding the tremendous revenue opportunity being missed by the provincial and territorial governments across Canada, and the great success witnessed in the United States through the rapid legalization of single event sports wagering, Canada has remained a laggard to the disappointment of many, until now.
Proposed change 1: Decriminalization of single event sport betting
On November 26, 2020, Federal Justice Minister David Lametti introduced legislation to decriminalize single event sport betting in Canada. If passed, Bill C-13, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (single event sport betting), would give provinces and territories the power and discretion to manage, regulate and license all types of single event sport betting on any sporting event, except horse racing, in their respective jurisdictions. 4
Under the new regime, provinces and territories could choose to adopt a private operator model for single event sport betting. Private businesses operating under licence would be able to bring competitive sports betting products to market – either online or in physical facilities. This serves as a long awaited and landmark proposal by the federal government that has the potential to create a new industry, offering Canadians an opportunity to place bets in a legal and regulated marketplace.
Bill C-13 is particularly notable in that it marks the first time that decriminalization of single event sports betting in Canada has been proposed under a government bill, which by its nature requires support from a Minister or Parliamentary Secretary (in this case, the Minister of Justice), thereby bolstering its chances of becoming law. All prior proposals over the past decade have been introduced by way of a private member’s bill which lacks the same level of governmental support and, in turn, likelihood of being passed.
Proposed change 2: Regulated online gaming marketplace
On November 5, 2020, the province of Ontario published the latest budget detailing plans to launch a regulated online market place for online gaming/gambling. Under these plans, the Ontario government is proposing to create a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario which would be granted authority to manage and regulate online gaming operated by private third parties. At present, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is the only operator approved to offer online gambling in the province. The new model is expected to be developed over the coming months, and if passed, will provide an unprecedented opportunity for gaming industry stakeholders to potentially unlock the billions in “grey market” gaming revenue currently being generated through facilitating a legal and regulated online gaming marketplace for all types of single event sports betting in the province.
Growth of U.S. legal sports gambling market
The proposals announced by both the federal and provincial governments follow similar efforts to decriminalize single event sports wagering in the United States which have culminated in tremendous success.
In May 2018, a United States Supreme Court decision overturned a federal law prohibiting states from authorizing sports gambling (the PASPA decision) 5 on the basis that such law was unconstitutional, thereby clearing the way for the legalization of single event sports betting in the United States.
In the two-and-a-half-years since the PASPA decision, 26 states have either launched legal sports betting or passed legislation and are waiting to launch 6 . In addition, more than $20 billion has been unlocked from the “grey market” and wagered on legal U.S. sportsbooks. 7
Investor response
The proposed federal and provincial changes are timely in recognizing the desire for increased consumption of online sports and e-gaming products.
The disruption caused by COVID-19 has further fuelled the pre-existing trend of sports consumption moving from traditional in-person gatherings to online virtual experiences. Sports betting and e-gaming in particular have benefitted from this online shift.
In March 2020, during the first wave of closures associated with COVID-19, New Jersey, Delaware, Nevada and Pennsylvania – the four U.S. states with legal online poker sites – all reported record-high online gaming revenues. 8 Further, New Jersey gamblers wagered more than $931 million on sports in November, the latest in a series of all-time monthly highs reported in 2020. 9
Online bookmakers such as DraftKings and Bet365 have sought to capitalize on these trends by offering an appeal to sports bettors seeking new opportunities through products related to e-sports specifically while traditional sports struggle to provide consistent offerings. Las Vegas and the casino industry have followed with the Nevada Gaming Control Board approving sportsbooks to take wagers on the ESL One: Dota 2, DreamHack Masters Spring, League of Legends European Championship, Overwatch League, FIFA League etc. 10
In response, the capital markets have warmly accepted a series of offerings from sports industry players with an online focus:
- In April 2020, DraftKings, a daily fantasy sports company, completed a $3.3 billion reverse merger with a special purpose acquisition company to bring the company public and began trading on the NASDAQ. As of January 12, 2021, the company’s stock price had surged from $19 on its first day of trading to $53, a clear sign of investor enthusiasm and support for the company and the sector more generally. 11
- In September 2020, payments company Nuvei Corp. closed the Toronto Stock Exchange’s largest tech IPO ever in raising $805 million in gross proceeds. Nuvei Corp. has already earned approvals allowing it to serve sports betting industries in Colorado, Indiana and West Virginia.
- In December 2020, Score Media and Gaming Inc. (theScore), which operates its own digital sports media and sports betting products, closed a bought-deal offering for gross proceeds of $40 million. Net proceeds are to be used, in part, to grow and expand theScore’s sports betting application’s operations in both the U.S. and Canada.
It is expected that further such offerings will continue to be embraced by the capital markets as COVID-19 continues to push industry participants online and as the proposed federal and provincial changes move forward.
After decades of waiting, the Canadian gambling industry has finally been dealt a winning hand. In the weeks that follow, Bill C-13 will face a second reading, followed by committee review, and a third reading, before it is able to be considered and potentially passed by the House of Commons and Senate. We will continue to monitor the progress of Bill C-13 and Ontario’s new online model and will continue to keep interested gaming industry stakeholders apprised of new developments.
To capitalize on the potential of the proposed changes, gaming industry businesses, service providers and entrepreneurs need an effective engagement strategy with provincial regulators. The 10 best books of 2020
"Homeland Elegies," "Sisters," and "Such a Fun Age" were three of our favorite novels in 2020.
Any list of the year’s best books should begin with the caveats, so here are mine: 1) In a year that called for an escape from reality as never before, I couldn’t bring myself to read much non-fiction — so this list is comprised entirely of fiction published in 2020; and 2) Apologies to a number of the year’s best-reviewed books — among them Booker Prize-winner “Shuggie Bain,” by Douglas Stuart, “Deacon King Kong,” by James McBride, “Hamnet,” by Maggie O’Farrell and “Memorial,” by Bryan Washington — which I still haven’t had time to tackle. (January, I promise!).
That said, this was an exceptional year for new fiction, from vets and newbies alike. Here are the ten I’m still thinking about.
1. Homeland Elegies, by Ayad Akhtar — From the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Disgraced,” this is a masterpiece of Philip Roth-style auto-fiction, as well as a scathing indictment of who does and does not have access to the American Dream. Don’t be surprised if this wins a Pulitzer, too.
2. The Glass Hotel, Emily St. John Mandel — For pure storytelling panache, this hypnotic tale of a Bernie Madoff-like figure, his mysterious younger wife and a hotel in remote Canada ran rings around everything else this year.
3. Leave the World Behind, Rumaan Alam — A slow-burn apocalyptic thriller that turns up the temperature in steady, terrifying increments. A Netflix version is in the works, set to star Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington, but you’d be wise to jump on the bandwagon now.
4. True Story, by Kate Reed Petty — A genre-skipping, shape-shifting drama about what may or may not have been a rape following a high school party; this summer release was the year’s most unheralded gem.
5. Such a Fun Age, by Kiley Reid — The Black nanny of a white toddler has a run-in with the cops at a grocery store, though that’s just the start of this wildly entertaining and whip smart novel in which race and class anxieties have every character tied up in knots.
6. Luster, Raven Leilani — This debut novel, about a Black twentysomething from Brooklyn who begins an affair with a white suburban dad in New Jersey, arrived on a tsunami of hype, all of which proved justified. Leilani’s often hilarious prose leaps off the page, and her story never goes quite where you expect.
7. Sisters, by Daisy Johnson — A puzzle of a narrative gets slowly pieced together in this gorgeously written novel that reads like a fever-dream mashup of Shirley Jackson’s “We Have Always Lived in the Castle” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.”
8. One by One, by Ruth Ware — One of the strongest efforts yet by mystery writer Ware (“The Woman in Cabin 10”), this one takes place at luxury ski resort in the Alps where the members of a tech company have gathered. Pure, page-turning bliss.
9. The Motion of Body Through Space, by Lionel Shriver — The latest by the inimitable Shriver (“We Need to Talk About Kevin,” “The Post-Birthday World”) was written off in many corners as didactic and trivial. But if the story is slight — an aging man decides to become a triathlete, to his wife’s considerable chagrin — Shriver remains our most incisive and ruthlessly funny observer of modern life.
10. Three short stories: “The Life of Chuck,” from “If It Bleeds,” by Stephen King; “Seeing Ershadi,” from “To Be a Man,” by Nicole Krauss; and “The Treasurer,” from “Fraternity” by Benjamin Nugent. Each of these story collections is accomplished but uneven — yet each also contained a perfectly sculpted mini-masterpiece.

From deeply personal memoirs to poetry and speculative fiction, this year's longlisted books speak to the theme: One book to bring Canada into focus.
We're looking at Canada's 2020 vision. How do we move forward together? These books inspire readers to think twice about the lens through which they see themselves and Canada.
The final five books and their champions will be revealed on Jan. 22, 2020.
The debates will take place March 16-19, 2020 and will be hosted by Ali Hassan. The debates will be broadcast on CBC Radio One, CBC TV, CBC Gem and on CBC Books.

NDN Coping Mechanisms by Billy-Ray Belcourt
In NDN Coping Mechanisms, Billy-Ray Belcourt uses poetry, prose and textual art to explore how Indigenous and queer communities and identities are left out of mainstream media. The work has two parts — the first explores everyday life and the second explores influential texts such as Treaty 8.
Belcourt is a writer and academic from the Driftpile Cree Nation. He won the Griffin Poetry Prize for his first poetry collection, This Wound is a World. His memoir, A History of My Brief Body, is coming out in May 2020.
Small Game Hunting at the Local Coward Gun Club by Megan Gail Coles
Small Game Hunting at the Local Coward Gun Club, Megan Gail Coles's debut novel, revolves around a cast of flawed characters all connected to a trendy St. John's restaurant, The Hazel. Over the course of a snowy February day, they are implicated in each other's hopes, dreams and pains as they try to survive harsh economic times in the province.
Coles is a playwright from St. John's. She previously published the short story collection Eating Habits of the Chronically Lonesome.
Radicalized by Cory Doctorow
Radicalized is a collection of four novellas that explore the quandaries — social, economic and technological — of contemporary America. Cory Doctorow's characters deal with issues around immigration, corrupt police forces, dark web uprisings and more.
Doctorow is a bestselling sci-fi novelist whose past books include Little Brother and Walkaway. He is also the editor of the blog Boing Boing.
Sputnik's Children by Terri Favro
Terri Favro dreams up a genre-bending adventure in Sputnik's Children. Narrated by a successful, lorazepam-addicted comic artist, the novel jumps between two realities: the one we all know (Earth Standard Time) and another, which has been ravaged by nuclear war (Atomic Mean Time).
Sputnik's Children was shortlisted for the Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic.
Favro is a Toronto-based comic book writer, essayist and novelist. Sputnik's Children is her third novel. She is also the author of Once Upon A Time in West Toronto and The Proxy Bride.
Amphibian by Carla Gunn
Amphibian is a novel about Phineas Walsh, a nine-year-old with a love of animals and an encyclopedic knowledge of the natural world. As he grapples with the damage that humanity is doing to the planet, a White's tree frog ends up in his Grade 4 class aquarium. He and his best friend Bird decide something must be done.
Amphibian was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book.
Carla Gunn is a professor at St. Thomas University.. Amphibian is her first book.
We Have Always Been Here by Samra Habib
Samra Habib's memoir We Have Always Been Here is an exploration of the ways we disguise and minimize ourselves for the sake of survival. As a child, Habib hid her faith from Islamic extremists in Pakistan and later, as a refugee in Canada, endured racist bullying and the threat of an arranged marriage. In travelling the world and exploring art and sexuality, Habib searches for the truth of her identity.
Habib is a journalist, photographer and activist based in Toronto. CBC Books named Habib a writer to watch in 2019. We Have Always Been Here is her first book.
Love Lives Here by Amanda Jetté Knox
Amanda Jetté Knox chronicles the making of her loving family in the memoir Love Lives Here. Happily married with three children, Knox noticed that her middle child was struggling with depression and skipping school. After Alexis came out as transgender at the age of 11, Knox dove headlong into trans rights research and advocacy. Just over a year later, Knox's spouse came out as transgender, marking another, ultimately triumphant, transition for the family.
Knox is a writer, activist and public speaker who lives in Ottawa. Love Lives Here is her first book. She also blogs at The Maven of Mayhem.
The Dishwasher by Stéphane Larue, translated by Pablo Strauss
Stéphane Larue had the least glamorous job at a restaurant — a dishwasher. But it gave him an inside look at the hard-living characters working in frenetic, stress-filled kitchens. He turned those experiences into a novel, The Dishwasher, which takes the reader into the demi-monde of restaurant kitchens.
The Dishwasher is Larue's first novel. It was translated into English by Pablo Strauss. The French version of the book, Le Plongeur, won the Prix des libraires du Québec and the Prix Senghor and was shortlisted for the Governor General's Literary Award for French-language fiction.
Son of a Trickster by Eden Robinson
Son of a Trickster is a novel about Jared, a compassionate 16-year-old, maker of famous weed cookies, the caretaker of his elderly neighbours, the son of an unreliable father and unhinged, though loving in her way, mother. As Jared ably cares for those around him, in between getting black-out drunk, he shrugs off the magical and strange happenings that follow him around.
Son of a Trickster was on the shortlist for the 2017 Scotiabank Giller Prize. It is being adapted into a television series set to premiere on CBC in 2020.
Eden Robinson is an award-winning author from Kitamaat, B.C. She is also the author of the novels Monkey Beach and Trickster Drift. Son of a Trickster and Trickster Drift are the first two books of a planned Trickster trilogy.
The Youth of God by Hassan Ghedi Santur
The Youth of God tells the story of Nuur, a Somali teen who is bullied at school for his religious piety, while he tries to balance his academics and part time job. Searching for a sense of purpose, and longing for male guidance in the absence of a father who abandoned his family, Nuur looks to two opposing father figures. One, a compassionate teacher named Mr. Ilmi who sees Nuur's potential and the other, an Imam, who has more heinous intentions in mind.
Hassan Ghedi Santur is a journalist who has worked for CBC Radio. He is also the author of the novel Something Remains and the nonfiction book Maps of Exile.
From the Ashes by Jesse Thistle
Jesse Thistle is a Métis-Cree academic specializing in Indigenous homelessness, addiction and inter-generational trauma. For Thistle, these issues are more than just subjects on the page. After a difficult childhood, Thistle spent much of his early adulthood struggling with addiction while living on the streets of Toronto. His memoir From the Ashes details how his issues with abandonment and addiction led to homelessness, incarceration and his eventual redemption through higher education.
Thistle is an assistant professor at York University and was a recipient of the Governor General's Academic Medal in 2016. From the Ashes is his first book.
The Lesser Blessed by Richard Van Camp
The Lesser Blessed is a darkly funny coming-of-age story that follows Tlicho teenager Larry Sole as he tries to navigate his complicated life, while coming to terms with the abuse he suffered as a child. Larry's life is further complicated when he meets Johnny Beck, a Métis boy who introduces him to drugs, and his girlfriend Juliet Hope, who Larry begins to fall in love with. The Lesser Blessed was adapted into a feature film starring Benjamin Bratt in 2012.
Richard Van Camp is a celebrated Tlicho writer who has written over 20 books across multiple genres. His other books include the graphic novel A Blanket of Butterflies, the short story collection Moccasin Square Gardens and the children's books Little You and We Sang You Home.
Worry by Jessica Westhead
Worry is a novel about what happens when two women who are longtime friends spend 48 hours together with their families at a cottage. For many years, Ruth has been best friends with Stef — a loud, confident woman who is her opposite in many ways. Now a protective mother, Ruth brings her four-year-old daughter Fern to Stef's family cottage. Fern runs off with Stef's older boisterous twins, while the two women are joined for a night of drinks and heightened emotion with the neighbour, Marvin.
Jessica Westhead is the author of the novel Pulpy & Midge and the short story collections And Also Sharks and Things Not to Do.
The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter
In Evan Winter's fantasy debut The Rage of Dragons, a world is caught in an eternal war and Tau is his people's only hope for survival. Described as a mix of Game of Thrones and Gladiator, The Rage of Dragons follows Tau as he attempts to get revenge and become the greatest swordsman to ever live.
The Rage of Dragons was originally self-published before it was acquired by Orbit Books. It is the first book in a planned series.
Dear Scarlet by Teresa Wong
Teresa Wong pens an honest and emotional letter to her daughter in Dear Scarlet. The comic describes her experience with postpartum depression — how feelings of sadness, loss and guilt consumed her — and her many attempts at healing.
Wong is based in Calgary. Dear Scarlet is her first book. CBC Books named Wong a writer to watch in 2019.
