Win It All is the tale of a small-time gambler named Edward Garrett. Garett is asked to look after a mysterious duffel bag whilst an acquaintance of his is in jail. He’s instructed not to look in it. Of course, he looks in it. It turns out it’s full of cash.

Garrett “borrows” some of the money and inevitably loses it by gambling. He then receives a call from the bag’s owner saying he’s up for early release and he’ll be coming for it soon. This prompts Garrett to embark on a frantic mission to get the money back. This involves yet more gambling on horseracing, poker, and just about everything else.

The Gambler (2014)

The Gambler is a remake of the 1974 movie of the same title. This time around it stars Mark Wahlberg and Jessica Lange. It’s the story of a university English professor named Jim Bennett. He has played a lot and lost a lot. One day, his friends ask him for a favor – he must look after a duffel bag while they’re in prison. When he finds out that the bag is full of money, our friend decides it’s a great idea to spend it all, playing at the casino. Of course, the money is gone, he’s broke and his ‘friends’ are released from prison a bit earlier than expected. He must act fast and get all the money he has spent back.

7. The Gambler

The movie is a 2014 remake of the 1974 original version, that tells the story of a university professor with a gambling addiction and a huge dept that he needs to pay back. This plot might sound familiar, but, as mentioned earlier, each movie presents a different point of view, showing the light and the dark side of the gambling life. Props to the writers of the script and the superb cast that took part into bringing the movie to the screen!

6. Casino

Based on a true story, the 1995 movie is one of Martin Scorsese’s best creations. Starring Robert DeNiro and Sharon Stone, the film presents what life is like for the high rollers. More specifically, around Sam ‘Ace’ Rothstein, a handicapper who is asked to keep an eye on the day-to-day activities at the Tangiers casino in the Mecca of gambling – Las Vegas. The movie offers an almost 3-hour-long exciting and dramatic experience, with a good act and an interesting plot.

5. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Heading to number 5, we have another casino classic – Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Based on Hunter S. Thompson’s novel, the film tells the story of a reporter and his assistant who want to find a better life in America. The movie includes a huge dose of gambling, psychedelic substances and fun unfortunate events.

4. Croupier

The 1998 production shows the perspective of the main character Jack Manfred, who is a casino croupier and a writer. He’s not a gambler, yet, he gets indulged in his London casino job and the harsh reality of gambling. As mentioned, the movie presents the character’s perspective, which is why some scenes and events may seem a little fantastic if you’re watching the movie for the first time.

This is one of our personal favourite casino movies, we’re not gonna lie! It tells the story of a student, who gets involved alongside his professor and a few other students in a blackjack card-counting team. They go small at first, and, of course, go to Vegas once they’re ‘ready’ to get the big cash. According to our research, the film is based on a true story of the popular MIT Blackjack Team and it is perfectly represented, with a little humor along the way.

Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

The 2001 remake of the 1960 Rat Pack original is still regarded as one of the most impressive casino-themed Hollywood movies of the post-millennium era. Lay the Favorite (2012)

The most recent of these five Vegas-inspired movies is Lay the Favorite , starring Bruce Willis and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The film is based on the book Lay the Favorite: A Memoir of Gambling by Beth Raymer, which details her life story as she journeyed from Florida to Las Vegas as a young, free-spirited woman. Beth lived with a group of other young girls in her Vegas hotel, one of which introduced her to a man named Dink Heimowitz, a professional sports bettor who made a living trading the fast-moving odds on sports betting markets. Dink was looking for a new assistant to help him lay big-money bets and Beth offered her services. Little did she know that she would have a head for numbers and become Dink’s lucky charm!

It’s a film which will almost certainly pique your interest in the sports trading markets, which are becoming increasingly popular and viewed even by financial investors as a viable investment opportunity. Last Vegas (2013)

The perfect heart-warming Sunday afternoon watch, Last Vegas is full of good, honest fun. The storyline surrounds three retired men who venture to Sin City to have a blow-out bachelor party in aid of the last remaining singleton in their social group getting married. Starring Hollywood legends such as Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Robert De Niro, it’s hard to disagree with rogerebert.com ’s view that the film is nothing more than “sentimental shtick”, but that is its appeal: it’s uncomplicated, harmless comedy!

Billy (Michael Douglas) is a millionaire notorious for resisting commitment to women but is eventually won over by a 30-year-old woman – and his bachelor party is the perfect opportunity to bring his old pals together. The quartet of friends soon realize that times have changed in Vegas and they have to adjust to take over the Strip like they used to!

There are four great gambling films streaming on Netflix in January 2018. Picking a favorite isn’t easy, so I’m just going to list them by production date, oldest to newest, followed by a brief review of each. Here goes…

Rounders (1998)

Now one of the most widely known films of Matt Damon’s career, this movie wasn’t what you’d call an instant success. On a measly budget of $12 million, it grossed about $23 million at the US box office. However, it’s since become a cult classic – one of those film every card player in the world has fallen in love with.

Rounders follows the story of Mike (Damon), a reformed gambler who once lost everything to Russian mobster, Teddy KGB (Malkovich). Now, with his life on track and a law degree pending, he agrees to face off on the felt once more with Teddy KGB to pay off the excessive debts of his friend, ‘Worm’ (Norton).

Oceans Eleven (2001)

Starring: George Clooney, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts
Director: Steven Soderbergh
In this modern take on the original 1960 classic, the star-studded cast received rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. It wasn’t just the plot, but the eloquence of dialogue and the superb skills of each actor to portray deep-seeded emotion, often with a single word. Plus, we get a panoramic look inside not one, but three of the most famous Las Vegas casinos, Bellagio, MGM Grand, and The Mirage.

The movie revolves around Danny Ocean (Clooney), who, immediately after being released from prison, begins recruiting a crew of – you guessed it – eleven people to knock off the aforementioned casinos, all at the same time.

This isn’t one of the best films of 2012 by any means, but it’s good for a laugh, as romantic gambling comedies go. The title isn’t just about betting against the underdog, either. It’s a thematic pun. Think about it…

Beth (Hall) leaves her lap dancing job in Florida and heads to Vegas to become a cocktail waitress. There, she meets Dink (Willis), a systematic gambler. Turns out, she’s great with numbers, and quite the gambler herself, so he hires her. She falls for him, but his wife Tulip (Zeta-Jones) doesn’t approve and forces him to make a choice. Once he does, his luck turns sour, and the film escalates from there.

Last Vegas (2013)

A good old fashion feel good comedy, Last Vegas has an all-star cast of Hollywood legends and a consistent line of humor. It’s like a seniors’ version of The Hangover.
