The temporary closing of the Casino du Lac-Leamy has resulted in the temporary furloughing of 775 employees.

The Quebec Government moved Gatineau and parts of the Outaouais region to the COVID-19 red alert level on Saturday, which includes new restrictions on businesses, and casinos must close. Quebec Premier Francois Legault said Tuesday he was moving three more regions to the maximum “red” pandemic-alert level. The regions south and northeast of Montreal and the Charlevoix region near Quebec City will be forced to close casinos, bars, gyms and other venues and ban indoor and outdoor private gatherings.

Starting this Friday, Loto-Québec will be closing the Casino de Charlevoix, which had reopened in July. It will also close its video lottery terminals (VLTs) in the Montérégie, Centre-du-Québec and Capitale-Nationale regions (Charlevoix included). In addition, Loto-Québec will be suspending Kinzo even in regions that are not on red alert —at present only one Kinzo hall is located outside of a red zone. Loto-Québec will also be suspending network bingo, even in halls that have remained open.

Casino de Montréal, Casino du Lac-Leamy, Salon de jeux de Québec, Salon de jeux de Trois-Rivières, Hilton Lac-Leamy Hotel, and VLTs in Greater Montréal, Chaudière-Appalaches, Capitale-Nationale, Mauricie, City of Gatineau and regional county municipality of Collines-de-l’Outaouais are all temporarily closed. The Casinos of Quebec

Casino de Montréal is an exquisite gaming venue and the largest casino in Montréal. There are three main buildings. Two of them were originally constructed as pavilions for Expo 67 and the third, which houses the 6th-floor casino, opened in 1993.

On average, nearly 20,000 people visit the facilities daily with over 3,000 slot machines, more than 100 table games, and 25 poker tables. There is a zone for millennials with nearly 100 interactive terminals, giant game screens, and an interactive host. Food and beverage options are wide open from quick bites to L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon. There is a cabaret and there are four bars/lounges.

Casino de Charlevoix

The Casino de Charlevoix is located 150 KM north east of Quebec City in La Malbaie. Annexed to the Fairmont Le Manoir Hotel, the Casino offers a Fairmont Hotel for accommodations for the overnight getaway or people traveling from farther away.

It is located about 394 km, or 4 hours and 30 minutes from Metro Montreal. The casino offers over 800 electronic machines, 23 gaming tables, and a poker room. There are multi-game stations and progressive jackpots.

Slots: 1,000 slot machines including 3 progressive jackpot machines.

Table Games: Table games include blackjack, free bet blackjack, Caribbean stud poker, high card flush, let it ride bonus, pai gow poker, roulette and three card poker.

The Casino Lac Leamy offers 300,000 sq ft of entertainment space with 1,800 gaming machines, 13 mass gaming tables, high limit rooms, a VIP salon, and a Texas Hold’em poker room. There is also a 1,100 seat theater. The casino opened on March 24, 1996, on the site of a former Portland Cement plant. The Hilton Lac-Leamy offers 349 smoke-free guestrooms and suites, a full-service spa, nightclub, and limo service.

Slots: 1,700 slot machines on the gaming floor with six jackpot slots where the jackpot continues to grow until someone wins.

Table Games: Big selection of table games including blackjack, blackjack switch, Caribbean stud poker, craps, EZ baccarat, free bet blackjack, high card flush, Let it ride, pai gow poker, sic bo, roulette, Three card poker, Ultimate texas hold’em and Spanish 21.

The Gaming Halls of Quebec

Québec City Gaming Hall – In addition to slot machines, VLTs, electronic roulette, blackjack, and keno you’ll find a Ludo Bar here for cocktails and beer with wide screens broadcasting sporting events. There is also a private reception room that can be rented for special events.

Trois-Rivières Gaming Hall – Located next to the Hippodrome Trois Rivieres (3R) you can watch live racing from the terrace from May through November. The games and lounge offerings here are the same as at the Québec City Gaming Hall. However, the private reception area is not available.

Quebec Casinos and Gambling

Quebec is the largest eastern province and one of 13 provinces and territories in Canada. It’s also the province largest of any by area and second only to the territory of Nunavut in size. While located far to the east, just west of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, it is considered to be in Central Canada. Quebec covers almost three times as much land as France or Texas. Most of the population is concentrated in urban areas along the Saint Lawrence River between the capital Quebec City, and the most populous metro area, Montreal which holds about half of the province’s population, or over 4 million people.

While larger than its western neighbor Ontario, there are fewer people there and the population is predominantly French-speaking. There are several First Nations surrounded by the province but there are no First Nation casinos there. The Kahnawake Mohawk Territory is across from Montreal on the St. Lawrence River and there may be poker rooms there. Poker Palace (formerly Snake’s) is “temporarily ” closed and Four Aces is closed as well.

However, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission is a major licensing and regulatory body for online casinos, poker rooms, and sports books and counts among its licensees SportsInteraction Casino. The Commission currently regulates about 100 online casino domains including Zodiac Casino, Betway and many others serving Canadian players. Land based regulation and licensing includes raffles and poker rooms, but only within the territory.

For such a large province with a bustling population, there really aren’t very many casinos there. Most of the properties that do exist are very nice, modern, and have all the amenities one would expect. The overarching controller of all gaming in the province is the state corporation, Loto-Québec. It was founded by the government in 1969 to regulate games of chance and keep organized crime out gambling activities. All of the corporations profits are returned to the public via government services.

Loto-Québec administers financing and controls for lotteries, online gaming, video lottery, bingo, and kinzo which is a form of keno. However, the Société des casinos du Québec (SCQ) which was established as a subsidiary of Loto-Québec in 1992 oversees the operations of the following land casinos: Casino de Charlevoix, Casino de Montréal, Casino du Lac-Leamy, and Casino de Mont-Tremblant.

The province’s online casino offering is known as Espacejeux and offers slots, table games, poker, bingo, and lotteries. The online offering uses Playtech software. Sports betting is handled via Mise-o-jeu and Pool Mise-o-jeu. Although never implemented, Quebec passed an internet censorship bill called Bill 74 in May 2016 that allows the government to block any online gambling site that is not approved by the government corporation. For now, Quebecers are still free to visit any offshore site they choose to.

Gaming Halls include Québec City Gaming Hall and Trois-Rivières (3R) Gaming Hall. There are also about 40 bingo halls operated for Loto-Québec by Bingo en réseau under Société des bingos du Québec. There are about 4,000 retail lottery outlets throughout the province. Société des loteries video du Québec markets and manages thousands of video lottery terminals in various bars and pubs offering line games, a form of video poker, and keno games.

You’ll also find an excellent seafood restaurant and a bar so you can quench your thirst when you need a break from playing.

While small, it’s got quite a lot of character. You’ll find Keno here, and three tables for poker, along with 302 gaming machines of various sorts, including electronic Roulette, electronic Poker, and electronic Blackjack. There is a bar and a restaurant on the property, but no hotel, so if you’ve got to cut one from your itinerary, this would be the one, but if you can work it in, it’s got a good atmosphere you’ll really enjoy.

The local government controls the Quebec online casino sector. Gambling over the internet was officially legalized in 2010.
