Torstar to launch online casino to help fund its journalism

Owner of Toronto Star, Hamilton Spectator and other papers getting into online gambling

Best Online Gambling In Toronto 2021, Online Casino Toronto

Torstar Corp., owner of the Toronto Star, the Hamilton Spectator and other papers, announced on Monday it plans to launch an online casino betting brand in Ontario this year.

"We are excited at the prospect of participating in a regulated online Ontario gaming market with a made-in-Ontario product," said Corey Goodman, Torstar's chief corporate development officer, in a news release.

After decades of being controlled by a trust owned by the families who founded the Toronto Star in 1892, Torstar was recently bought by an investment company called Nordstar, which promised to maintain the company's focus on producing "world-class journalism befitting the Star's storied history."

The Toronto Star has, since its founding, espoused the so-called Atkinson principles, which are named after one of the founding families and broadly focus on advancing progressive causes such as worker protections, civil liberties, and other social justice issues.

Torstar's new owners say they are branching into online gambling to help pay for those continuing efforts.

"Doing this as part of Torstar will help support the growth and expansion of quality community-based journalism," co-owner Paul Rivett said.

Plans contingent on expansion of online gambling market

The company cited government data showing Ontarians spend about $500 million a year on online gambling, with the vast majority going to grey market websites domiciled outside Canada, where there is less legal and regulatory scrutiny, and the revenue does little to stimulate the Ontario economy.

Under current rules, only the Ontario government itself is licensed to conduct online gambling, but the province's last budget opened the door to expanding the market to other companies some time this year.

Torstar says its plans are contingent on those government plans moving ahead.

Rivett said it's to everyone's benefit for an Ontario-based company like Torstar to become a player in the province's industry.

"We want to ensure the new marketplace is well represented with a Canadian, Ontario-based gaming brand so that more of our players' entertainment dollars stay in our province," he said.

Company diversifying revenue models

A gaming industry consultant hired by Torstar to advise the company said it's not clear yet how much revenue the new business will generate since the government review process is not complete.

"We don't know how big the market is going to be in Ontario yet, because it will depend on the consultation process within government, which is about to happen in the next couple of months," Jim Warren said in an interview with the Canadian Press.

"What we do know is that Torstar is looking at diversifying the revenue model of how we fund and pay for reporters, columnists, and editorial staff."

The move is also just the latest by Torstar to diversify its business beyond newspapers and into other digital realms.

In November, the company launched a parcel delivery service, and then in January partnered with retailer Golf Town to purchase the SCOREGolf brand.

Concern about media independence

The move is not without its critics. Tom Muench, a city councillor in Richmond Hill, Ont., just north of Toronto, said newspapers are critical to the functioning of a healthy democracy, so it gives him pause that such a prominent newspaper chain may be financially beholden to an outside business to keep its doors open.

"I think it's fair to say that if a casino was to pop up in communities say six months ago, many local Torstar-owned papers would write a concerned local story," he told CBC News in an email.

He also wonders how those same newspapers would report on it, if any other sort of business were to open an online gambling operation on the side.

"If the federal government propped up the media with government tax dollars and now with casinos, how do we assure a strong independent news and media industry?"

3 top Canadian casino reviews

Millions of people have been enjoying gambling games for entertainment for a very long time. It comes as no surprise that as the Internet became a more common form of entertainment for people, online casino games have become increasingly popular over time. However, as the Internet has evolved, the number of casinos that are readily available have increased exponentially. This creates a difficulty in determining which online casinos are reputable and which ones cannot be trusted.

This is why we have compiled this list of some of the most trustworthy Canadian online casinos to help you choose which one you might spend time checking out. When you join an online casino, you need to know that the casino can be trusted with your money.

What to Look for In an Online Casino

Each Canadian online casino is not created equally, so we have reviewed each of the casinos based on a specific set of criteria. Before you deposit real money into your entertainment, you want to make sure that your money and information are safe, that you have access to fun games and your favourite games, and that you also have access to plenty of bonuses and free game play.

Good Security

A secure and trustworthy website is absolutely the most important criteria for your online casino of choice. Each online casino should be fully licensed and all of this information should be easily accessed on their website. If you cannot find the information about their licenses, then they probably do not have them. Further, you want to make sure that the technology that the website uses to protect your information and your bank account information is equally as secure as any other site, which undertakes online transactions.

Best Online Gambling In Toronto 2021, Online Casino Toronto

The other major criteria that is involved with casino security is whether or not the casino allows customers the option to easily deposit or withdraw money. Ideally, you should see no restrictions regarding your ability to either deposit or withdraw your money or your winnings. Most of the reputable casinos understand that you want access to your money immediately, so this is usually not an issue.

Bonuses and Games

We have already mentioned that you want to double-check that the casino you choose, offers the casino games that you like to play. Casinos that do not offer plenty of variety are going to get boring quickly. So, if you want to be sure that your money gets deposited into the right place, go ahead and check out the game selection before you get started.

Most of the highly competitive casinos operate in a similar way to a real casino. This means that they offer plenty of bonuses. They will more often than not, offer sign-up bonuses for potential customers who are just joining their online casino. They will also offer loyalty points for established clients who continue to play with the casino long-term. If you are interested in bonuses, then be sure to check out which casinos offer the best bonuses.

Our Top 3 Choices

Karamba

Fully licensed, Karamba is everything you want in an online casino. When you visit karamba.com perhaps the first thing you’ll notice is the sleek, compact design of the GUI. The site is extremely intuitive; you’ll easily find slots, table games and virtual sports. There are some fiercely competitive prizes and some of the best bonuses available for new and established clients. Bonus terms and conditions are clearly displayed. Additionally, with seamless, transparent high quality transactions Karamba ensures complete data security and no restrictions on withdrawal of winnings.

Jackpot City

Jackpot City is an online Canadian casino that has over 20 years of experience in the industry. They do a great job with providing a variety of games and they have options for both table games and slots. One of our favourite things about Jackpot City is that they have choices that will allow you to play with a live dealer. If you have ever been in a real casino, then you might miss the feeling of talking to the dealer while you play. Jackpot City can give you the best of both worlds.

Ruby Fortune

Ruby Fortune is another terrific online casino that is completely trustworthy. They have every license that an online casino should have and they have plenty of game options as well. However, it is the really impressive signing bonus that makes it one of the top choices for online games in Canada.

Final Thoughts

Finding an online casino that is trustworthy and secure for your online gaming is really not as simple as it sounds. There are tons of factors that must be considered as well as digging through the multitudes of options that are available. This is why we chose to pick a top three for you, to cut out all of the research that must be done to ensure that you can trust an online casino with the money that you deposit to their site. Whatever option you choose, remember to make sure that it offers your games of choice before you deposit money to the website.

Toronto Star owner Torstar to launch online casino in 2021

Torstar is entering the online gaming market.

The corporation announced Monday it intends to launch an online casino betting brand in 2021 pending approval from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

“As an Ontario-based media business and trusted brand for more than 128 years, we believe Torstar will provide a unique and responsible gaming brand that creates new jobs, offers growth for the Ontario economy, and generates new tax revenue to help support important programs in our province,” said Corey Goodman, Chief Corporate Development Officer at Torstar, in a statement.

At present, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is the only operator approved to offer online gambling in Ontario. But the Ontario government promised to open up the market to private operators in its most recent budget, enacting legislation that gives the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario the authority to issue licences to private companies.

“We want to ensure the new marketplace is well represented with a Canadian, Ontario-based gaming brand so that more of our players’ entertainment dollars stay in our province,” said Paul Rivett, Chair and co-owner of Torstar.

“Doing this as part of Torstar will help support the growth and expansion of quality community-based journalism.”

In a press release, Torstar announced it has assembled an “iGaming team” to head its expansion into the market. The team includes Gil Steinfeld, a marketing strategist for several U.S.-based gaming operators; Don Bourgeois, former General Counsel for the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario; and Jim Warren, president of Riseley Strategies Inc., a Toronto-based business consulting firm.

Rivett said the gaming site will include casino games and sports betting.

“We want to offer online gaming in a reasonable and responsible way,” he said. “It’s something that, if done responsibly, allows people to partake in their form of recreation and entertainment without making bad decisions.”

A Newspaper Casino? Toronto Star Company Is Getting Into The Online Gaming Business

A Toronto Star newspaper box is seen here in front of the newspaper's Toronto offices. Torstar, the newspaper's owner, says it plans to enter the online gaming business to support its journalism.

Can gambling profits support the newspaper business? The company that owns the Toronto Star is betting on it.

Torstar Corporation announced Tuesday that it would launch an online casino brand later this year, pending approval by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

"As an Ontario-based media business and trusted brand for more than 128 years, we believe Torstar will provide a unique and responsible gaming brand that creates new jobs, offers growth for the Ontario economy and generates new tax revenue to help support important programs in our province," Torstar Chief Corporate Development Officer Corey Goodman said in a statement.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is currently the only approved operator of online gambling in the province, but Ontario's government has pledged to open the market to other outfits, the Star notes.

Paul Rivett, the chair and co-owner of Torstar, cited two reasons for the media company's unusual new business venture.

The first, he said, is to ensure that an Ontario-based company is represented in the new marketplace, "so that more of our players' entertainment dollars stay in our province." Ontarians spend more than 500 million Canadian dollars a year ($396 million) on online gaming, but most of their money is spent in "unregulated, grey-market offshore websites," according to Torstar.

The second is a more novel argument: the funds will help prop up its news business. "[D]oing this as part of Torstar will help support the growth and expansion of quality community-based journalism," Rivett said.

In addition to the Toronto Star, which is Canada's largest daily newspaper, Torstar owns six regional daily newspapers in Ontario and more than 70 weekly community newspapers in the province. It has also made a number of digital investments.

Until recently, Torstar had been controlled by a trust of the families who founded the Star. The newspaper has operated under what are known as the Atkinson Principles, which hold that a "progressive newspaper should contribute to the advancement of society through pursuit of social, economic and political reforms." The principles were established by Joseph Atkinson, publisher of the Star from 1899 to 1948.

Last year, Torstar was bought by investment company NordStar Capital, also co-owned by Rivett.

At the time of the sale, John Honderich, the chair of Torstar's board, described the Star's efforts to innovate and succeed as "an uphill struggle."

"In this new digital era, with Facebook and Google taking the lion's share of all digital advertising, media outlets have been going under across North America. The COVID-19 crisis has made the situation even worse," Honderich wrote.

Jim Warren, a gaming industry consultant hired by Torstar, told the CBC that it's not yet known how much revenue the online gaming business would generate.

"What we do know is that Torstar is looking at diversifying the revenue model of how we fund and pay for reporters, columnists, and editorial staff," he said.

TORONTO -- Torstar Corp. is making a gamble of its own with plans to start an online casino betting business in 2021 once it goes through a consultation and approval process with the Ontario government, the publishing company announced Monday.

A gaming industry consultant hired by Torstar to advise the company said it's not clear yet how much revenue the new business will generate since the government review process is not complete.

"We don't know how big the market is going to be in Ontario yet, because it will depend on the consultation process within government, which is about to happen in the next couple of months," Jim Warren said in an interview.

"What we do know is that Torstar is looking at diversifying the revenue model of how we fund and pay for reporters, columnists, and editorial staff."

The Toronto-based company, which publishes the Toronto Star and numerous other print and online publications in Ontario, has made a number of diversification announcements in recent months.

Torstar in January formed a partnership with retailer Golf Town to buy ScoreGolf Magazine and related content.

In February, Torstar announced a partnership with Onlia, an online home and auto insurance provider.

Onlia chief executive Pieter Louter said in a joint statement on Feb. 11 that the insurance company would sponsor some of the Star's editorial initiatives and add some of its online tools to Torstar sites such as Wheels.ca and community real estate pages.

Torstar's online gaming initiative follows an announcement in the 2020 Ontario budget, issued in November, which included a promise to license private operators to participate in a regulated online gaming market.

Torstar says its new venture is pending approval from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and the setting of a launch date by the Ontario government.

Paul Rivett, Torstar's chair and co-owner, said in a statement Monday that the made-in-Ontario product keeps dollars in the province while the revenue can support the growth of its journalism.

Torstar is publisher of the Toronto Star as well as other daily newspapers in Ontario, including the Hamilton Spectator, and more than 70 weekly community newspapers.

The company was taken private last year by NordStar Capital LP.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published March 1, 2021.

Toronto Gambling Guide – Where to Gamble in Toronto

Home » Casino Reviews » Canada Casinos & Gambling » Toronto Gambling Guide – Where to Gamble in Toronto

Toronto is the capital city of Ontario, the largest province in Canada by population. Since 1988, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has been regulating gambling in the region, including charity gaming, online gaming, casino gaming, and lotteries.

Casinos

Currently, all the casinos situated in the Toronto area host over 6,000 slot machines in total.
The most extensive Toronto slot is offered by OLG Slots Casino, which is located at the Woodbine Racetrack. The area is 57,000 square feet in size, and the casino features over 3,000 slot machines. However, there are no table games on offer as not all racinos in Ontario are allowed to provide them to their customers.
All non-tribal gambling establishments in Toronto must be operated under the ownership (or partial ownership) of the OLG.
Some of the most popular casinos close to the city include the Great Blue Heron Charity Casino and the Rama Casino. The latter opened in July 1996 and is operated by the Mnjikaning First Nation Tribe. It is the largest First Nations casino in the country. The Great Blue Heron Charity Casino has been operating since 1997 and is located in Port Perry.
The Ontario provincial government made efforts to strike a deal with the First Nation tribe. After a lot of back-and-forth negotiations, an agreement was finally reached in 2011, which guaranteed that Casino Rama would not be negatively affected as a result of the OLG’s changes to the casino industry in the province in an effort to modernize it.
Over the years, there have been plans to open more casinos in Toronto. 2018 has brought about talks of developing a new casino on a site situated on the Toronto waterfront that has been abandoned since a state-run theme park closed its doors a few years ago.
Previous proposals for new casinos in the greater Toronto area considered the amount of revenue the establishment could bring to the city as well as its potential social costs.
There is a single online casino available to Toronto residents – PlayOLG, operated by OLG. You can play table games such as blackjack, poker, roulette, and baccarat as well as purchase lottery tickets. The site was officially launched in January 2015.

Sports Betting

Toronto is a city that loves its sports. It’s home to many high-profile teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays (Major League Baseball), Toronto Maple Leafs (National Hockey League), Toronto Raptors (National Basketball Association), and Toronto Argonauts (Canadian Football League).
Despite the popularity of sports in the Canadian capital, sports betting offerings are underwhelming. As a result, many residents turn to offshore operators to get their sports betting fix.
For example, you are not allowed to place bets on single games – only parlay bets are permitted. The offering as a whole is not up to scratch, and the primary sports betting in Toronto is run by the OLG Proline betting system.
Bets cannot be placed online – the process requires the use of a pen and paper. You can select the teams you want to bet on and finalize the wager at one of the select retailers located in Toronto.
While there is an online platform called the OLG Proline for playing online casino games, OLG Proline selections can only be viewed; you cannot place your bets through the site.
The odds are not competitive, and there is no rival to force OLG to offer more reasonable rates. There is a grey area of online sports betting in Toronto.
Technically, it is not illegal to use offshore sites that are licensed elsewhere. People are not prosecuted for doing so, which makes it a convenient option for many gamblers.
With the United States ending its federal ban on sports betting, there have been calls to open up online gambling laws in Canada to ensure they can compete with US operators.

Animal Racing

While all other gambling forms are regulated on a provincial level, horse racing is still governed by a federal agency – the Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency. This is due to section 204 of the Criminal Code, which states that pari-mutuel gambling is not considered to be a form of illegal betting.
The Ontario Racing Commission overlooks the organization of racing events and ensures that all involved parties are appropriately licensed.
The Woodbine Racetrack is the largest racetrack in Toronto. There are both standardbred and thoroughbred racing held at the track, which has been operating since 1956 and underwent significant renovations in the early 1990s. There are now three separate racetracks on the site.

Poker

Poker is a popular pastime in Toronto, and it can be played in many casinos. Most racetracks are not allowed to offer table games. Online poker in a peer-to-peer setting is available through the state-run PlayOLG platform.
Currently, there are two main poker rooms in the Toronto area, which are located at the Canadian National Exhibition Casino and Casino Rama.

Lottery

As per the 1992 Gaming Control Act, AGCO is in charge of all lottery games offered by OLG. This legislation was introduced to ensure that the integrity of lottery games was preserved and that players were adequately protected. It also helped pave the way for the first land-based casinos in the province.
If you want to take part in the lottery by purchasing a ticket at a retail store, you need to be at least 18 years old. If you are looking to buy your ticket online through the OLG platform, you must be 19 or older.
The primary lottery in Toronto is the Ontario Lottery. It has been operating since 1975, following the implementation of the Ontario Lottery Corporation Act. Further improvements were made to this act in 2007 to reflect the changing times in the space.
Since 2010, there have been many plans to take the province’s lottery to the next level. The OLG was given more control of the lottery – for example, as of 2012, it has been allowed to sell tickets through its online platform.

Bingo

The AGCO manages and regulates bingo halls in Toronto. If you are looking for a regular bingo license , you need to ensure that any given game does not exceed $5,500 in total prizes; a special bingo license is required for bigger prize pools.
Since 2005, electronic bingo has been available on the OLG online platform and in certain casinos.

Conclusion

Toronto is a city that historically has liked to gamble, which is reflected in its current offering. The lack of proper sports betting is a significant shortcoming that is currently being looked at by the respective legislators.
There are also talks of new casinos being opened in and around the city as there is currently not a lot of competition in the region.
