Masters Edition: The Ultimate Guide to Blackjack Games in Canada
Casino gambling exists in every hemisphere – from Italy to Brazil, New Zealand to Canada. Every culture has its own perception of gambling activities, just as every gambler has their own predilection of what constitutes a pleasurable gambling experience. Here in Canada, one form of gambling is viewed far superior to all others. I’m talking, of course, about the game of blackjack.
Canadian blackjack is hardly any different from the games played in other regions of the world. Its our perception, our approach, our cognition of sustainability that sets so many of us apart from gamblers in other parts of the world. We play it for fun; we play it for money; we play it to win; most of all, we seek to gain a premium understanding of the game’s complexities so that we can accomplish all of these goals at once.
Before we continue – because believe me, there’s a lot to cover! – here’s a quick Table of Contents. If you’re looking for something in particular, this will help guide you to it. Note that the table only includes main pages of interest. The more you dig, the more you will find! If you’re looking for something specific, please use the Search bar in the top left corner.

Prevalence of Blackjack
The prevalence of blackjack in the Great White North is made visible in several ways; the most notable being an impressive reduction in gambling losses compared to other major countries of the world. According to years worth of data mining, researchers found that Canada ranks 6 among the top in gaming nations in terms of overall losses, and 7 th in losses per adult. That may sound bad, but compared to the higher ups on the list, it’s not.
The United States of America ranks #1 in overall gambling losses, totaling over $115 billion in 2016. Canadians came in at #6, losing significantly less money; about $11 billion total the same year. Losses per capita painted a similar picture, this time pushing Australians into the #1 spot with $1,000 lost per person, per adult. Canadians came in #7 with just over $400.
What this tells me and other logically minded thinkers is that more Canadians are responsible with their gambling bankroll, and that they make better decisions when choosing games and invoking worthwhile strategies. In layman’s terms, we know the value of a good blackjack game, and the inherent equity of proper decision making at the tables.
Availability of Blackjack in Canada
There are more ways to play blackjack in Canada than you may realize. The local casino is the most obvious. From B.C. to Nova Scotia, more than 100 casinos sprinkle the map of Canada. I’m talking about real Canadian casinos with gaudy carpets sprawling across capacious gaming floors. Not slots parlors or charitable bingo halls, but expansive gambling houses that supply all the usual casino games, from slots and video poker machines to multifarious table games.
We’ve been hitting up establishments like these for more than three decades, and they are the first place we tend to think of when it comes to seeking out a good game of blackjack. But in today’s modern technological age, you don’t even have to leave your house to enjoy real money blackjack.
Interested parties can enjoy online blackjack from anywhere in Canada with an internet connection. You can play from home on a desktop or laptop, relax on the sofa with a tablet, or partake in your favorite games from anywhere on a mobile device. Thanks to this globally transcending technology, a game of blackjack is, quite literally, at your fingertips, any time, anywhere. Technology is so advanced these days that some online casinos deliver live dealer blackjack games – real cards, real dealers, playable in real time via HD-quality live stream.
For those who pay close enough attention to local media outlets, a good blackjack tournament can often be found in charitable destinations. Church organizations are known to host bingo games to raise funds, but every once in a while, some will mix things up with a charity blackjack event. These are especially popular for major fund raising activities. A local parish might supplement its weekly coffers with bingo, but turn to blackjack when the structure is in need of repairs.
Professional Blackjack Players from Canada
Based on all of the evidence above, you can surely imagine just how many blackjack pros Canada has produced over the last century. Oddly enough, there aren’t that many who became famous for it. It’s not because they weren’t good at their craft. Quite the contrary, they were so good at concealing their abilities, they became equally clandestine about their identities.
While professional blackjack players from other countries have a tendency to brag about their aptitude, chronicling their experiences on blogs or in auto-biographical books in hopes of making some extra cash, most Canadians are prone to secrecy.
Once a blackjack pro labels himself (or herself) such, the casinos will do anything and everything in their power to keep them off their tables. Intentional or not, authoring professional blackjack books is nothing short of a declaration of retirement. I’ll continue digging deep to find more Canadian blackjack pros. Until then, see the following available profiles for more information:
Tips and Strategies for Winning Blackjack
No casino game in the history of gambling has ever evoked as much strategic forethought as blackjack. While most of us are familiar with at least the concept of employing a basic decision-making strategy, the majority of players – all but the most seasoned veterans – fail to realize that the slightest variation in rules can change the dynamics of a basic strategy chart.
Players must choose the game to be played before choosing the chart to incorporate for that game. For this reason, serious players should get to know the impact of each variable rule on the house edge before they come to understand which ones are considered player-friendly blackjack rules, and which ones are not. A perfect strategy chart can then be drawn up once all the rules for a specific table have been verified.
No matter how inclusive a chart is, the one thing it cannot do is turn the edge into the player’s favor. In decades past, maybe, but never for long. Once the pros began exploiting the rules, and the casino realized its error, the game would be changed to turn the tides back into the casino’s favor. And now that technology is so advanced, any alteration in the rules is tested by computers to ensure a house edge – no matter how big or small – always exists.
The only way a professional blackjack player can outwit the casino at this point is to employ one of many masterful card counting techniques. As you’ll quickly learn on this website, there are multifarious methods of card counting that players can employ. Some are extremely simple, others far more complex, but none so complicated as to require anything beyond a grade school education and modicum powers of memorization.
Types of Blackjack Games in Canada
In the early days, blackjack was blackjack. The dealer hit anything up to soft 17, players could double on 9, 10 or 11, splitting pairs was a given, and a natural blackjack paid 3 to 2. That’s the way 21 was introduced, and that’s how every casino offered it.
It didn’t take long for casinos to realize they could alter the odds by mixing up the rules. Decades later, we have all sorts of blackjack games on the market. The largest casinos offer a wide variety, but none so much as online casinos, where there’s no lack of space to house virtual tables.
My goal with this page is to build the most comprehensive list of variant blackjack rules and side bets on the web. I’ve already complied more than 50 variations here, and will continue to add more as I find them. Each comes with a quick description of the rules and the relative house edge. I’m also working to build a complete rules page for each game on the list, so please bear with me as I get those pages published and linked.
Choose a game from the following alphabetical list to jump to its rudimentary description below, or simply keep scrolling to learn about all the different variations of 21 on this page, including their basic rules and any associated side bets and/or bonus payouts.

21+3 Blackjack
The name of this alternate blackjack game refers to a special side bet that can be placed. “21” is the game itself, and “3” refers to three specific cards dealt – 2 to the player, and the face-up card of the dealer. The side bet pays off if these three cards happen to fall in line with any of the hand ranks on the +3 pay table.
The problem with this game is that the rules and side bet pay table can fluctuate wildly. I’ve seen it played as Classic Blackjack, European Blackjack and others. I’ve also seen an array of side bet pay tables with RTPs ranging anywhere from 2.6% to over 13%.
See our Complete Rules of 21+3 Blackjack for more information.
21 Burn (Betsoft)
21 Burn is a unique blackjack variant exclusive to the Betsoft-built suite of online casino games. Its namesake “Burn” feature is represented by the player’s ability to burn (discard and replace) the second card dealt to their hand; not the first card, nor third or any card thereafter – only the second card may be burned and replaced with a new card.
Taking advantage of the burn feature will require the placement of a special “Burn Bet“, equal to half the original bet. The burn bet has its own pay table, awarding a payout only if the new burn card is an Ace (see Burn Bet Pay Table below)
The trade-off for the circumstantially beneficial Burn option is a 1-to-1 payout for any natural blackjack. Fortunately, an Ace+10 resulting from a burn will count as a blackjack.
Betsoft applies the following rules to its online Burn 21:
- Decks: 6
- Soft 17: Dealer Hits
- Doubling: Yes, on any two cards
- Splitting: Yes, only once
- Double after Split: Yes
- Draw to Split Aces: No
- Surrender: No
- Dealer Checks for Blackjack: Yes
- Blackjack Pays: 1 to 1
- House Edge: 0.54%
Burn Bet Pay Table
Burn Card Is… | Payout |
Ace of Spades | 7 : 1 |
Any other Ace | 2 : 1 |
Any other card (non-Ace) | Lose |
3 Hand Blackjack
3 Hand Blackjack is a multi-hand variant of 21 developed by the UK and Canadian based games studio, HungryBear Gaming. It’s most alluring feature is in the name – the ability to play up to three hands against the dealer at once. This is optional, of course. Players can choose to play one, two, or three hands at a time. Otherwise, there are no special rules or side bets, leading to an RTP of 0.58%.
Three Hand Blackjack is played by the following rules::
- Decks: 5
- Soft 17: Dealer Stands
- Doubling: Yes, on 9-11
- Splitting: Yes, only once
- Double after Split: No
- Draw to Split Aces: No
- Surrender: No
- Dealer Checks for Blackjack: Yes
- Blackjack Pays: 3 to 2
- House Edge: 0.58%
Note: The HungryBear Gaming website currently depicts an inaccurate RTP of 98.94% (house edge 1.06%) for this game. The true RTP is 99.42%, as determined by the British Columbia Lottery Corp (BCLC), which supplies the game on its provincial online casino website. You can learn more about this discrepancy, and the events leading to its discovery, here.
American Blackjack
American blackjack is not a specific game, but rather a variable set of certain rules that oppose traditional European blackjack rules. For example, American blackjack allows doubling on any two-card total, whereas European rules only permit doubling on 9, 10 or 11.
A typical game of American Blackjack, as offered by Random Logic and Dragonfish powered online casinos, is played by the following rules:
- Decks: 6
- Soft 17: Dealer Stand
- Doubling: Yes, on any two cards
- Splitting: Yes, only once
- Double after Split: Yes
- Draw to Split Aces: No
- Surrender: No
- Dealer Checks for Blackjack: Yes, on Ace or 10
- Tie for Blackjack: Push
- Blackjack Pays: 3 to 2
- House Edge: 0.48%
Ante Up 21
Ante Up 21 is a trademark variant of blackjack from FYI Gaming, Inc. It’s a rather complicated game as there are actually three parts taking place at once. There’s the traditional blackjack game, and 3-card poker game (requires Ante / Play bets), and an optional side bet bonus game. Those last two are based on the player’s first two cards and the dealer’s face-up card. If the player’s blackjack hand busts, it still qualifies to play for the poker and bonus hands.
- Decks: 6
- Soft 17: Dealer Hits
- Doubling: Yes
- Splitting: Yes
- Surrender: No
- Dealer Checks for Blackjack: Yes, on Ace or 10
- Tie for Blackjack: Push
- Blackjack Pays: 3 to 2
- House Edge:
See the Complete Rules of Ante Up 21 for additional information about the Ante Up poker game and variable side bet bonus pay tables.
Atlantic City Blackjack
This version earned its name over the years by carrying the most common set of blackjack rules applied in Atlantic City casinos. The only difference between this game and other standard varieties are the rules that determine the player’s and dealer’s actions, which, in turn, result in one of the lowest house edge blackjack games on the market today.
- Decks: 8
- Soft 17: Dealer Stands
- Doubling: Yes, on any first two cards, and after split
- Splitting: Yes, up to 3x
- Resplit Aces: No
- Draw to Split Aces: No
- Surrender: Yes
- Dealer Checks for Blackjack: Yes
- Tie for Blackjack: Push
- Blackjack Pays: 3 to 2
- House Edge: 0.35%
Blackjack 11s
Blackjack 11s is a very basic game of blackjack on the surface. It is the side bet, Perfect 11s, that it draws its name and fame from. Without this bet, it’s just a typical game of blackjack. In fact, the base game rules are irrelevant, and could vary from one casino location to the next.
The side bet is based entirely on the player being dealt a total of 11 in the initial 2-card deal. If this happens, the side bet wins. If not, it loses. Of course, the rank and suits of those cards will determine how valuable the payout for the 11 is, with one or more progressive jackpots that can be released.
Blackjack Burnout
This game first debuted at the 2016 Cutting Edge Table Games exhibition in Las Vegas. It’s been picked up by several casinos since, giving players one intriguing proposition. Before the hand begins, players have the option of activating the Burnout feature. The cost is 20% of the original bet, placed in a special Burnout circle of the table. It is not a bet. You cannot win it back, and it is not refundable. It is simply an optional fee that can be paid to activate the Burnout feature.
When active, the player has the option to Burn the last card dealt to his hand, to be replaced by the next card from the deck. Burnout can only be applied once per hand, and only after hitting or doubling, even if the hand busts. Splitting, however, will negate the option to Burn a card.
Casinos are capable of altering the rules as they wish, but the following are the suggested rules as defined by the game’s creator, Angel Espino:
- Decks: 6
- Soft 17: Dealer Hits
- Doubling: Yes, on any two cards
- Splitting: Yes, up to 3x
- Double After Split: Yes
- Resplit Aces: No
- Draw to Split Aces: No
- Surrender: No
- Dealer Checks for Blackjack: Yes
- Blackjack Pays: 3 to 2
- House Edge w/ Burnout: 1.43%%
- House Edge w/o Burnout: 0.64%
Consecutive Wins Side Bet
Although not required, casinos are given the option to invoke a side bet that will pay a bonus to any players who achieve a specific number of consecutive wins. The casino can choose how many consecutive wins are necessary to win the side bet. Look for one of the following options, including payouts and relative house edge, to be available.

Tip No. 1: Learn Basic Blackjack Strategy
One of the many reasons for the popularity of Blackjack online and off is that it relies heavily on the skill of the players. It’s not like Roulette or slots, where you have to have luck on your side, and the decisions you make during the game will have a huge impact on its outcome.
Gifted mathematicians have created a scheme that tells you how to play to your best advantage whatever combination of cards you’re dealing with. It’s called Basic Online Blackjack Strategy and you’d be a fool not to learn it before you get to the table! Once you’ve got the basic tenets memorised, you’ll be fine, since they’ll apply to most variations with just some minor tweaks.
The Strategy was first created by generating computer simulations of millions of possible card combinations, initially by Julian Braun of IBM. It’s gone on to be used the world over by savvy online blackjack players who are in it for the sheer enjoyment of playing as well as making healthy returns when they do!
Online blackjack already has a very low house-edge, another reason so many players adore it, at just 0.5%. But if you implement Basic Strategy, you can bring this down to an astonishing 1%. Bet that got your attention! And thanks to the very same technology that lets you try to beat the dealer to 21 on your smartphone, tablet, or desktop, it’s easy for you to get hold of. A simple online blackjack site search will bring it up and you can then spend some time getting to know it. Naturally, as your experience increases, you will need to use it less and less as you internalise the best moves and start to use them instinctively with your games of blackjack in Canada.
Using Specific Online Blackjack Strategy Cards
Another great aspect of playing online blackjack instead of at land-based casinos is that there’s no one to stop you using an actual Basic Strategy card when you need to. It’s by no means illegal to use them, and we suggest you study them beforehand, so you know how to find what you’re looking for quickly when diving into your games of Canadian blackjack..
You could even make this part of a relaxing ritual when you get home, organising snacks, something to drink, and your printed card next to whatever device you’re going to be playing online blackjack on.
Do top quality online blackjack games, generous payouts and enticing cash bonuses in Canada sound like your idea of a good time? Then don’t hesitate! Check out our range of top-rated Canadian blackjack online casinos to find your perfect casino match today!

Blackjack Rules
Achieving a higher hand than the dealer without exceeding a total of 21 is the primary objective of playing blackjack. Canada gambling venues embrace traditional blackjack rules, hence there are not any special rules or regulations that must be learned or incorporated into the games. Each bj game variation can have slight differences in their rules, which will be available to players from the game's interface. With the exception of live dealer games, the casinos we recommend all offer free blackjack game options as well so that you can try out new gaming environments, easily learn new games, test newly learned techniques, or just enjoy playing without having to dish out any money. It is a great way to learn the rules to a game that you may be unfamiliar with.
Strategy
Blackjack is a game of skill and strategy, not simply chance. Unlike any other casino game, in Blackjack it’s possible to boost the odds in your favour by using certain playing and betting techniques.
Basic Strategy
Basic Blackjack strategy is a set of rules for different types of hands, which advise when to hit, stand, split or double down to maximize your chances of winning.
In Blackjack, the dealer is bound by the rules of play: The dealer must stand on 17, continue to draw if a hand is less than 17, and stand when the total is from 17 to 21.
Unlike the dealer, a player has the freedom to decide what to do with every hand. In order to increase the odds of winning, players can follow something called “basic strategy”.
If you learn basic strategy, you’ll always know the right move in Blackjack.
How basic strategy works
How to play a hard hand
In a hard hand, you have two cards, without an ace:
- With 8 or less, always hit
- With 9, double if the dealer has 3 through 6, if not, hit
- With 10, double if the dealer has 2 through 9, if not, hit
- With 11, double if the dealer has 2 through 10, hit if the dealer has an ace
- With 12, hit if the dealer has 2 or 3, stand if the dealer has 4 through 6, if not, hit
- With 13-16, stand if the dealer has 2 through 6, if not, hit
- With 17-21, always stand
How to play a soft hand
In a soft hand, you have two cards, including an ace:
- With ace-2 or ace 3, double if the dealer has 5 or 6, if not, hit
- With ace-4 or ace-5, double if the dealer has 4 through 6, if not, hit
- With ace-6, double if the dealer has 3 through6, if not, hit
- With ace-7, stand if the dealer has 2, 7 or 8. Double if the dealer has 3 through 6, if not, hit
- With ace-8 or ace-9, always stand
How to play pairs
Pairs are simply two cards of the same points value:
- With a pair of aces or 8s, always split
- With a pair of 2s or 3s, split if the dealer has 2 through7, if not, hit
- With a pair of 4s, split if the dealer has 5 or 6, if not, hit
- With a pair of 5s, double if the dealer has 2 through 9, if not, hit
- With a pair of 6s, split if the dealer has 2 through 6, if not, hit
- With a pair of 7s, split if the dealer has 2 through 7, if not, hit
- With a pair of 9s, split if the dealer has 2 through 6, and 8 or 9. Stand if the dealer has 7, 10 or ace
- With a pair of 10s, always stand

Frequently Asked Questions
Blackjack Basics
Blackjack is a Card Game
The game is played on a standard 52 card deck. The suit of the cards you are given does not matter in blackjack.
Every Card Has a Numeric Value
Aces can be worth either 11 or 1 (depending on which is best for your hand), face cards (King, Queen, and Jack) are worth 10, and all other cards are worth their number.
21 is the Goal
Put simply, the goal in blackjack is to attain a card hand that totals closer to 21 than the dealer, without going over 21. If you go over 21, you “bust” and lose.
How To Play Blackjack Online
While online blackjack can intimidating, the game is actually much simpler than it seems. Here’s how it works.
As mentioned above, you are given two face-up cards to start. The dealer gives themselves one card face-up and one card face-down. Then, you have the choice to hit or stand. If you hit, you receive one more card. You can keep hitting until you choose to stand, reach 21, or go over 21 (a bust). If you stand, you stop receiving cards, and it’s the dealer’s turn to turn over their face-down card and reveal their total.
The dealer has to keep hitting until their cards total 17. Whoever’s hand total is closest to 21 without going over, wins. If either of you go over 21, you bust and lose immediately. Getting 21, or a blackjack, isn’t an automatic win: there’s the chance you and the dealer will both reach 21, in which case you would tie.
An Example Hand of Blackjack
- The player makes a bet.
- The player receives cards from the dealer – a Queen and a 4. The dealer also has two cards, but only one – an 8 – is visible to the player.
- The player adds up their cards and realizes that their total is only 14. They decide to hit and take another card – a 6.
- Satisfied with their total of 20, the player stands.
- The dealer reveals their other card – an Ace – bringing the total of their hand to 19.
- Since the player’s total is closer to, but not exceeding 21, they win the round.
How To Win at Blackjack
Manage Your Bankroll
This bears repeating for all types of online gambling – have a bankroll strategy and stick to it. In blackjack, we recommend ensuring that each individual bet represents – at most, 5% of your total bankroll. For example, if you have $100 to play with, we recommend playing $5 hands at most.
Never Chase Losses
Blackjack in particular is a game of math. If you play wisely and follow sound strategy, you will gain the edge over the long term. Do not play recklessly and emotionally, and never abandon your blackjack strategy to win back anything you’ve lost.
Capitalize on Good Hands
Use splitting and doubling down to maximize your wager amount on good hands. In online blackjack, being aggressive is required at times. If one more ten would give you a winning hand, take a calculated risk and double down.
When to Hit, Stand, Double Down, or Split
After the bets are placed and each player has received their two initial cards, you’ll have to choose whether you want to hit, stand, double down, or split. You’ll want to make this decision based on what’s in your hand, and what’s showing in the dealer’s hand.
When to Hit in Blackjack
A “hit” is simply asking for another card from the dealer
Depending on what the dealer is showing and the casino’s rules, a general strategy would be to ‘hit’ when your cards total 14 or less.
For example: if your cards total 12, it would be a good idea to hit. There’s a good chance of you getting a card under 10, so you probably won’t bust.
When to Stand in Blackjack
“Standing” is choosing to receive no more cards from the dealer
A player would “stand” when they’re confident they have a high enough hand to beat the dealer, typically on hands that total 15 or more (depending on what the dealer is showing).
For example: If your cards total 17, you could definitely still choose to hit, but now there’s a greater chance of you getting a card that would put you over 21. Depending on what the dealer is showing in this scenario, it may be wiser to stand.
When to Double Down in Blackjack
“Doubling down” is choosing to double your original bet and committing to receiving only one more card from the dealer
As an example, a player should generally “double down” if their hand totals 10 or 11, as the odds of the next card being a ten or face card is in the player’s favor in the long run. Again, this will depend on what the dealer is showing as well as the casino’s dealer rules.
Remember – doubling down doubles a player’s bet, and they only get one more card. If the player gets a good card and wins, they win double, but if they get a bad card and lose, they’ll lose double.
When to Split in Blackjack
A “split” is only an option when a player is dealt a pair
“Splitting” a pair turns the original pair into two separate hands, doubling the amount of hands the player has on the table and doubling the bet in the process.
For example, if a player was dealt two 8s, they could split these. They would then have two hands worth 8 each, and receive an additional card for each hand. They’d then play these hands the same way they’d play one – choosing to hit, stand, double down, or even to split again.
Choosing when to split is a bit complicated, and depends on which pair you receive, and what the dealer’s showing. When you’re choosing to split, remember these three things:
- Don’t split a winning hand. If you’re dealt two 10s, it’s tempting to double down, but don’t. If you’re dealt two 10s, you know you have twenty, which is likely a winning total. Hold tight.
- Only split good cards. Remember, you’re turning these cards into new hands, so only split cards that you actually For example, if you’re dealt a pair of fours (a low, mathematically unfriendly card) there’s no point in splitting – you’ll just end up with extra hands full of fours.
- Each time you split, your wager doubles. Just try to remember what you’re getting into – splitting doubles your potential winnings, but also your potential losses.

Online Blackjack Payouts
When playing blackjack, it’s important to find the top casinos which offer the best payout percentages. This will help make your bankroll last longer and give you the best chance of winning.
The standard blackjack casino payout is 3 to 2. While in recent years a number of casinos have switched to a 6 to 5 payout, we recommend never playing for less than 3 to 2. This means that for every $2 bet, the player would receive $3 back on a winning hand – 1.5x the initial wager.
Traditionally, blackjack is the casino game with the highest overall payout percentage and the lowest house edge. While this varies across casinos, blackjack variations and individual games, by using a good strategy and choosing a game with favourable rules, you can find online blackjack games with a tiny (
Different Types of Online Blackjack
When you decide to play blackjack online, you have a host of options when it comes to the different variations of the game. Here are a few of the most popular options for Canadian players, but rest assured, there are plenty of other games that follow the objective of blackjack.
Spanish 21
This variation of real money online blackjack allows players late surrenders, doubling after a split, re-splitting aces, players 21 always wins, players blackjack beats dealer blackjack, a player may double down on any number of cards. There are also different payouts when a player hits 21. Whether it’s 5,6,7 card 21’s or three-suited 7’s.
Live Dealer Blackjack
In this popular Blackjack variation, players can enjoy a traditional casino experience while playing online as there is a live dealer in real-time dealing the cards. Live blackjack is a great option for players that want the live casino experience with the convenience of playing from their laptop or mobile device.
European Blackjack
European blackjack is a popular variation with minor differences from traditional real money blackjack. One central difference is it only played with two decks of cards, where others use six to eight decks. There’s no hole card in the European variation of the game and the dealer doesn’t receive a second card until the player has completed their hand. Doubling down is also limited. In European blackjack, players can only double down if they have a hand of 9 through 11.
Single Deck Blackjack
This version of blackjack is only played with one deck. For years, single deck was the standard, but casinos began to mix in multiple decks to make card counting more difficult.
Free Blackjack vs. Blackjack for Real Money
Most casinos offer a demo mode where you can play a selection of their games for free. This allows you to learn the rules, test your strategy and see how you like the casino before making a deposit. We recommend playing in demo mode until you understand how the game works. Of course, the inescapable downside of playing for free is that you can’t win money, and that bonuses and promotions for free players are incredibly rare. That’s why, once comfortable, many players choose to play for real money. Blackjack is a great game whichever way you play, but check out the pros and cons of playing for real money to make sure you make the right decision.
Pros of Real Money Blackjack
- Chance to win real money which can be cashed out
- Increased level of excitement and entertainment
- Ability to collect free casino bonuses
- Huge variety of blackjack variations and game designs available
- Live dealer tables are almost always exclusively for real money players
Cons of Real Money Blackjack
- As with all real money games, there is a risk that you may lose money
- You’ll have to register at a casino before you start playing

Blackjack
This is the name of the game, and what it is called when your hand reaches a total of 21. When you get a blackjack, you win, unless the dealer also gets a blackjack (in which case, it’s a “Push” or a tie).
When your card total exceeds 21, you “Bust”, which means you lose that hand and your bet. A bust can only happen if you choose to “Hit” after you have received your initial two cards. If the player and the dealer both bust, the player loses.
Double Down
After your first two cards are dealt, if you think you just need one more card to win, you can double your bet. Sometimes this is offered on split hands.
Even Money
This is Blackjack-specific insurance. If you have a blackjack and the dealer is showing an ace, you can ask for even money, which is a 1:1 payout.
First Base
The player to the dealer’s immediate left if at first base. They get their cards first and will be the first to act, unless they are playing in a tournament.
Five Card Charlie
When a player has five cards in front of them and still hasn’t busted.
Add a card to your hand. After you have been dealt your first two cards, you can choose to “hit” and get another face-up card. You can do this until you choose to stand or until you hit 21 or go over (a “bust”).
Hole Card
The card that is left face-down (the dealer’s second card). Whenever you decide to stand, the hole card will be revealed.
House Edge
The mathematical advantage that the casino has over you. This is to ensure that the casino makes a profit over time. The house edge varies per game and per casino.
Insurance
When the dealer has an ace, you can purchase insurance. Players can win back some of their bet if the dealer wins by getting a blackjack. This is usually offered in American Blackjack.
A hand with two cards of the same value (ie. two 10s). Pairs can be split if you wish.
When you and the dealer have the same hand value, your bet is returned and you don’t win or lose anything.
Side Bet/Proposition Bet
A.K.A. a prop bet. When you make a wager based on something else happening in the game that isn’t necessarily a part of Blackjack.
Soft Hand
When your hand contains an ace that can be used as a one or an 11.
Split
If you’re dealt two cards of the same value, you can choose to split your cards and play with two hands. You place your bet on each hand.
Stand
Don’t take any more cards. Only do this if you think you have a better hand than the dealer.
Surrender
If you feel like the game isn’t going very well and you don’t have a good chance of winning, you can choose to surrender. If you do, you get half of your bet back.

Blackjack Online FAQs
Blackjack is both the name of the game, and the name of a winning hand. If any player – you or the dealer – receives an Ace and a ten-value card (i.e. a ten or a face card) as your initial two cards, this is called a blackjack. In this instance, the player dealt the blackjack automatically wins this hand.
If your cards add up to more than 21, this is called a ‘bust’, and means you lose that hand and your bet.
If, once you and the dealer are done taking cards, you have a higher hand than the dealer and you didn’t go over 21, you win! Typically, you earn back your original wager, plus that same amount again. For example, if you wager $10 and win, you’ll be paid $20.
If, once you and the dealer are done taking cards, you end up with the same total, this is called a “push”. This is essentially a tie, and your original wager will be returned to you.
The best way to begin playing blackjack is to find free online blackjack games and practice using the online platform. There is a detailed blackjack overview on this page and a great strategy sheet that will help even the most novice player learn the basic strategies.
The best way to win at blackjack online is to follow a betting chart. The odds are always going to favor the online casino, but by playing with a sound strategy, you can lower that limit less than one percent.
No, plenty of casinos make their games available to play free online blackjack. This is a great way for new players to get introduced to gambling and the online platform. For experienced online blackjack players, this allows players to experiment with betting strategies and playing techniques without risking any real money.
This depends on the online casino a user chooses to play with. Most online casinos don’t require any software to be downloaded to play on their site. Some will require players to download their mobile casino to play if the player wants to use a tablet or mobile smartphone.
No, you cannot count cards playing blackjack online because online casinos use a random number generator to deal cards. This system means every hand is being played with a new deck. A user could count cards, but there would be no value in doing so.
Not at any of the online casinos we recommend at Gamble Online. Blackjack (as with all casino games) has a mathematical percentage that favors the house, although the payout percentage varies by the skill level of the blackjack participant. Blackjack games at online casinos use random number generators (RNGs) to ensure games are fair.

How to Play Blackjack
Blackjack is a casino card game where players try to reach a hand total of 21. Hence, blackjack commonly being referred to as “21”. It is generally played with one standard deck of 52 playing cards. Depending on the version of online blackjack, more than one deck of cards may be used. Playing blackjack online is a great opportunity as a new or seasoned player to get a hang of the game, and to hopefully picket some cash in the process. What’s more, there are free online variations of the game available for Canadian players.
There may be multiple variants of this game, but there are core rules that are the same across all versions. We recommend trying free blackjack online first. To help you out, our team of experts has assembled a simplified guide to explain the core rules of blackjack:
The goal of blackjack is for your cards to equal 21. Dealer receives two cards, one face down and one face up. You are dealt at least one hand. You can ask the dealer to hit, stand, split or double down. Game continues until you stand or go over 21. Dealer’s hand is revealed last. Dealer must hit until their total is or exceeds 21, or reaches 17 and stands. If your card count is higher than the dealer’s (but under 21), or the dealer busts (goes over 21) then you win. When you or the dealer gets “blackjack” on the initial deal, that means the starting hand adds up to 21.
Top Online Blackjack Versions
Online blackjack in Canada is one of our favourite casino games to play for real money. As a Canadian player, you’ll easily find a variant that suits you. Each online casino is different, which means that you may find one type of online blackjack, or quite a few.
The top versions of blackjack online that you’ll find are:
European Blackjack – This is by far the most popular variant of all. Familiarizing yourself with the basic strategy for this version will help ensure your ability to win. American Blackjack – This expands on the Euro blackjack game by allowing players additional chances to win. You are allowed to Double Down on any hand and Split it multiple times. The dealer also can win automatically by hitting blackjack from the initial cards dealt. Classic Blackjack Gold – The player’s challenge is to achieve a hand totaling 21 or less when the dealer either has a lower hand, or their hand exceeds 21. Multi-hand Blackjack Gold – This is one of the most popular and intriguing games out there. Players have the option to bet on up to five hands at a time. Spanish Blackjack or Spanish 21 – The game features eight decks, but each deck is missing the “10” cards. Double Exposure Blackjack or “Zweikartenspiel” – This requires the dealer to place his cards face up, giving you an equal playing field. Atlantic City Blackjack – This variation is the same as generic blackjack, with some small additions including forcing the dealer to stand on soft 17 and being able to double down after a split.
What We Look For in Blackjack Sites
We consider all our options when choosing sites to recommend when it comes to blackjack. Since it’s one of the most popular online casino games there is, it’s important the site is doing it well. Below are some things we consider when looking into gaming options:
- Different Variants – Having different variants allows you to find the version that suits your playing style.
- Free Play Opportunity – Players can get a handle of the game before investing real money.
- Live Dealer Category – For those looking to have a more interactive blackjack experience.
- Blackjack Bonuses – Variety, play through requirement and payout types are all considered when looking at these bonuses.
Blackjack Strategy and Tips
Blackjack is one of the easiest casino betting games to learn. We have compiled a few tips and tricks to suit both the novice (who we suggest should first try out a free online game) and the skilled blackjack player.
When playing blackjack online for real money, look for hands that have great odds, and learn the rules of the game. Practicing with a free online blackjack game provides you with the opportunity to hone your blackjack strategy at no expense. Playing online blackjack comes with a lot of benefits, such as bonuses. If there is a bonus you’ve been saving for, consider using it to give your bankroll a boost. Check what types of bets you can make before starting the game. This will allow you to put a strategy together properly. Most betting shops on the internet will try to increase their house edge by not allowing you to double down after you split. Make sure you check this when preparing to play. When doubling down isn’t allowed, hit instead. If you cannot split, then play your hand to its combined value.
Blackjack for Free vs Real Money
We’ve talked a lot about playing blackjack for real money so far, but what about for free? Free play may seem pointless as betting and winning is the point for most online casino players, but it really is a great thing for both new and seasoned players to try out every now and again. Playing for free is available at every casino we recommend upon sign-up and a risk free way to try out new tips and strategies before betting real money. Once you’re confident in your new skills, that’s when it’s time to place your bets.
Playing Blackjack on Mobile
One of the main benefits of online casinos? You can play on the go. And the same goes for blackjack. Almost every casino we recommend allows players to play blackjack on their mobile device wherever they are. All you have to do is download their app, or visit the site through your web browser, log in with your regular account information and find your way to the casino games. There should be a specific section for table games, or you can even search the specific blackjack variant you’re looking to play.
Online Blackjack Bonuses
While some casinos do offer blackjack specific bonuses from time to time, there are offers that players are able to take advantage of all time for blackjack. The first and most obvious, is the welcome bonus, or any match bonuses in general. This is a great opportunity to double or even triple your deposits and put them towards playing blackjack. If you’re not a new player, consider looking for no-deposit bonuses, reload bonuses, and live dealer bonuses if you’re into playing the game live.
Blackjack Glossary
Knowing the lingo is part of mastering online blackjack in Canada. Before you focus on blackjack strategy, you need to understand the terminology. If you play blackjack online, you’ll find your gaming performance improved by becoming acquainted with the terms below.
Blackjack Term | Definition |
Hit | Have the dealer give you another card to increase your hand total. In many variations of blackjack online games, the dealer must hit until they have a total hand size greater than or equal to 17. |
Stand | If you decide to stand, you agree not to take more cards. This means you will finish the game with the total you had at the time of the stand. |
Bust | A ‘bust’ is where your total combined value comes to higher than 21. This can only occur if you hit instead of standing with your hand and means you lose your bet. |
Double Down | This doubles your bet. It also means you agree to take only one more card (after which you must stand). |
Push | Your total and the dealer’s total are the same and between 17 and 21. In this scenario, neither wins. |
Split | You have the option to split two cards of the same value. This results in you having two blackjack hands against the dealer. Sometimes, players need to make a second bet for the second hand. |
Side Bets | This is also known as a proposition/prop bet or novelty bet. Side bets involve you making a wager based on something happening during the game that doesn’t affect the actual game. |
Online Blackjack FAQs
Yes, you can play blackjack free online. Many of Canada’s first-class casinos on the internet allow players to play the games for free. We always recommend that players learn the ropes by starting with free games when possible.
Yes, of course you can. You can play blackjack online for free or real money on your mobile device, using your web browser. You can also find many blackjack apps that are Android and iOS compatible.
Maybe you’re looking to host a blackjack game with some friends and you’re wondering how to deal? As the dealer, you will deal from left to right, starting with the player on your far left. You will then deal one card facing up to each player at the table, and one down to yourself. Repeat this step until every player has two cards facing up, and the dealer has two cards facing down. Be sure to lay the cards so that both values on the face up cards are clearly visible.
Now for the most important topic: how to win at blackjack. While there is no formula we can give you that will have you winning every time, there is one thing you can do to help your chances of leaving with a little bit of cash. The most important (in our opinion) is having a handle on the game. You have to know what you’re doing, what the rules are and about the different versions if you want to make your mark. Good thing we have out lined all of these things above.
The best way to win when playing digital blackjack is to get a great understanding of the rules, variations and strategies that we provide for you above. Although there is no foolproof way to win, having the best understanding of the game possible is a great start.
Yes, it is. One of the benefits of playing online is the Random Number Generators (RNGs). These randomize the cards you are dealt, and add up your hand value for you. All top-rated online casinos will have their games tested regularly by third-party auditors. This ensures that your games are always fair and random.
Absolutely! Casino games from the websites we recommend care about your privacy and safety online. If you need to know more, check out each website’s privacy policy and customer support for more information. What’s more is that it is 100% legal for Canadian players to play at an offshore online casino.
All you need to play is an internet connection, and a computer or mobile device. Most online casinos offer mobile-friendly blackjack.
Our selection of casino sites are not only supplying online blackjack games, but also offer other cards games like poker, various table games, and—of course—online slots. Your phone is a mobile casino wherever and whenever you want to find your fun!
