Arctic Brotherhood Hall
The building that houses Gertie's was formerly known as Arctic Brotherhood Hall. It was built in 1901 in a mere three weeks by the Arctic Brotherhood, who were a fraternal social organization for men living in the northwest section of North America. Camp No.4 of the Arctic Brotherhood was formed in November 1899 in Dawson City. When it was completed the building was regarded as the largest and grandest building in the northwest. In 1925, the Arctic Brotherhood ceased to exist and soon after the Fraternal Order of Eagles moved in. Eventually the building was turned into a community hall. In 1967, the building was renovated and briefly renamed to Centennial Hall in honour of Canada's 100th birthday. Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall
Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Hall is Dawson City’s world famous non-profit gambling hall and named after bona fide dance hall queen, Diamond Tooth Gertie. Dawson City is in the middle of the Yukon wilderness - its name synonymous with the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. During the Gold Rush, in order to distinguish herself from numerous Klondike kings and queens, Gertie Lovejoy wedged a sparkling diamond between her two front teeth.
The casino is less than 20km from Dawson City Airport – heading south west along the Klondike Highway. There are a number of hotels close to the casino including the Eldorado, Bombay Peggy’s Inn and Pub and the Aurora Inn – cheaper options include the Dawson City Bunkhouse and the White Ram Manor.
Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Hall, for adults 19 and over only, presents nightly live entertainment and high-energy performances seven days a week from May until late September. It is a re-creation of an 1898 saloon, complete with small-time gambling, honky-tonk piano and dancing girls.
The casino's winnings go toward town restoration, and at weekends it can get packed as locals jostle with tourists to support preservation. Replete with cancan dancers and a singing master of ceremonies named Gertie, Canada’s oldest gambling hall gives you a chance to re-live the heady days of Dawson’s Gold Rush era.
With three nightly shows by Gertie and her Gertie Girls, Diamond Tooth Gertie's is a fixture of fun-filled entertainment where patrons can enjoy a beverage while playing. The 8,000 sq ft casino offers blackjack, roulette, live poker, American style Roulette and an array of glittering slot machines.
Daily cash games include Texas Hold ‘em or Omaha. Weekend Hold’em tournaments are held (sign-up by 2.30p.m. Saturdays and Sundays starting 16 June). No limit tournaments are held every Tuesday (sign up by 7.30p.m.). Both tournaments have a $75 buy-in and $25 re-buys. There is an entrance fee of $10.
If you need some extra cash to play in the casino or just fancy a break, try panning for gold in the creek that launched the biggest gold rush the world has ever known at Claim #6 on Bonanza Creek – just 18km from downtown Dawson City!
Diamond Tooth Gertie's gambling hall in Canada
Diamond Tooth Gertie's: Canada's first legalized gambling establishment; named in honour of the famous dance hall queen.
- Michael Gates

- Letters
Diamond Tooth Gertie’s: Canada’s first legalized gambling establishment; named in honour of the famous dance hall queen. With a sparkling diamond placed between her two front teeth, she mined the miners, who parted with their hard-earned gold in exchange for her affections. That’s the way she is portrayed.
Today, bedecked in fabulous eye-catching gowns, Miss Diamond Tooth Gertie entertains thousands of visitors in the non-profit gambling establishment in the heart of the Klondike. Gillian Campbell is perhaps the most famous entertainer to have performed this role.
But who exactly was Diamond Tooth Gertie? Was she the dance hall queen of legend?
Ella Lung Martinsen, in her classic narrative Trail to the North Star Gold, describes her father’s encounter with Klondike Kate Rockwell and Cad Wilson on the road to Hunker Creek the summer of 1899, where they were to perform with Diamond Tooth Gertie and the Oregon Mare. But Rockwell and Wilson never shared a stage together; Rockwell didn’t even arrive in the Yukon until 1900 – a year after Wilson had left.
In Martinsen’s account, Gertie says that Rockwell is “plumb crazy” to fall for a “patent leather kid” by the name of Alexander Pantages, who will love her and leave her. But that exchange could never have taken place in 1899 – before Rockwell even arrived in the Klondike. The entire encounter with the dance hall queens on the road to Hunker Creek is fictitious.
Diamond Tooth Gertie – the legend – like Klondike Kate, is a latter-day phenomenon, created years after the gold rush long expired.
Gertie Lovejoy actually existed, but our search to find reference to her in the newspapers of the time did not substantiate the legend. The papers covered the theatre circuit in Dawson with a close eye, yet her name is not found mentioned as a headline entertainer. She was not listed in any theatrical advertisements, or reviews of the stage attractions of the day that me and my wife, Kathy, could find.
We do know this much: The Klondike Nugget newspaper reported that she was seen entering the Phoenix dance hall on the evening of April 6, 1899, on the arm of US Consul James McCook. They shared a bottle of wine, after which McCook embarked on the most notorious binge of the early days. There is no further reference in this article to Gertie, who seems to have been ditched for another dance hall girl named Pearl Hall.
Gertie cropped up in January of 1900 when she lost $2,000 worth of personal belongings, barely escaping a fire in the Monte Carlo with her life. She was obviously doing well, but there is no explanation of precisely what she was doing.
She eventually married Charles W.C. Tabor, Dawson City’s most prominent lawyer. Laura Berton, in her book, I Married the Klondike, describes her in later years, attending one of Martha Black’s evening social functions, as: “a demure little woman, quite pretty and very self-effacing. She had little to say, but when she did speak, the famous diamond could be seen glittering between the two front teeth.”
The Blacks were always faithful to their political allies, and Charles Tabor shared Black’s maritime origin, as well as his politics. Mrs. Black may also have enjoyed breaking social convention by inviting a former dance hall girl to one of her social functions.
Beyond that, it is difficult to find hard facts.
However, in response to a casual question about Gertie posed by a staff member at the Yukon Archives, Kathy investigated further. She found five lines in a clipping from an obscure newspaper article, dated 1915, referring to a visit by a Mrs. C.W.C. Tabor to her parents in Pepperell, Massachusetts. Kathy sent an inquiry to the Pepperell Public Library and received a reply from Barbara Smith, a member of the local historical society and volunteer at the library.
Smith was able to supply information that confirmed that Gertie was born July 7, 1874. She was Mary Isobel Lovejoy, second daughter of Daniel and Angela Lovejoy of Harbor Street in Pepperell. The Lovejoy ancestral Harbor Street home still stands today.
Thus began a chain of correspondence between them that has pieced together much new information about Diamond Tooth Gertie Lovejoy.
Genealogical records reveal that Mary Isobel married one Fred Ellis February 2, 1896. In December of 1900, the Pepperell Advertiser reports that Mrs. M. Isabel Ellis of Dawson City, and her sister Hattie, of New York, were visiting their parents.
We don’t know whether Fred Ellis died, or if they divorced, but we know from the marriage certificate that Ms. Lovejoy was joined to Charles C.W. Tabor in holy matrimony in Portland, Oregon, November 7, 1901. The document lists her last name as Lovejoy, not Ellis, raising curious questions about the first marriage. The census of 1911 shows the Tabors residing on Queen Street in Dawson City.
Charles Tabor was the pre-eminent lawyer in Dawson City during the early years of the twentieth century. He even served as the representative for North Dawson in the territorial council from 1912 to 1915. Tabor died in the fire of the Yukonia Hotel in February, 1917, while his wife was Outside. She was the sole beneficiary of his estate, which was valued at less than $15,000. In these documents, she is identified as Mae Isobel Tabor.
Tabor was honoured by flying the flags of Dawson City at half mast. A letter confirming his elevation to King’s Counsel was received from Ottawa just days after his death.
Three years later, in East Oakland County, California, Isobel Tabor married Stephen C. Hart, occupation hotel steward, of San Francisco. The documents list Hart as being 35 years of age, and Isobel being 32. In truth, she was 11 years older than Hart.
Isobel was married to Stephen until his death 35 years later. She became a Christian Scientist in 1926, and a practitioner in 1928. She remained so until she died in San Mateo in 1957. Though it is often stated in print that she was 90 years of age, she was in fact 83 years old. And that seems to be the story of her life – often misrepresented, often misquoted, definitely misunderstood and mythologized.
What we know about the legendary Diamond Tooth Gertie Lovejoy is that she was in Dawson City during the gold rush and inspired the community to name its gambling hall, the first legalized casino in Canada, after her memory.
What we don’t know about her is what she was really like, and what happened to her over the course of her life. The records suggest that once she married Tabor, she lived a rather conventional life, and after Tabor’s death, she remained in the San Francisco area until she passed away 40 years later. She left no descendants as far as we know. More research may reveal other details of her life.
Perhaps Kathy and her fellow history hunter Barbara Smith will succeed in finding Gertie’s personal papers, or other evidence of how she lived her life. Perhaps we may even learn the fate of the diamond-studded smile that made her a legend of the Klondike.
Michael Gates is a Yukon historian and sometimes adventurer based in Whitehorse. His new book, Dalton’s Gold Rush Trail, is now available.
Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall staying closed due to pandemic - at least for now

Gerties won't open May 8 as planned but KVA not ruling out possibility of opening later this season
A major tourist attraction in Dawson City is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the association that runs Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall is optimistic it will be able to open in some capacity this summer.
"We're hopeful that we'll be able to welcome people in at some point," said Paul Robitaille, marketing and events manager of the Klondike Visitors Association (KVA).
Gerties has a bar and a casino, and in peak season offers three nightly cancan shows.
In March, bars were ordered closed by the territory's chief medical officer of health. On Friday, the KVA announced Gerties would remain closed until further notice.
It was supposed to reopen on May 8, when more tourists usually start visiting the community.
The association is considering new safety precautions for the venue, but Robitaille acknowledged that Gerties could not open right now because it's a bar.
Wayne Potoroka, mayor of Dawson, said the pandemic has shown how important every business is to the community.
"All of the nighttime entertainment establishments, not having them open, you know, is going to make life look a little bit different for folks in Dawson City. We are a good time in town, but not right now."

Depending on the year, Gerties employs about 75 people, mostly year-round residents, and it has capacity for 400 people, Robitaille said.
The performers are booked through a local company, and they often come from outside of Yukon but he said they've decided that if performances are held this year, they won't bring in people from outside of the territory.
Robitaille said the not-for-profit organization's main source of revenue is from Gerties.
"If Gerties doesn't open then it really jeopardizes what we can do as an association," he said.

Dawson City visitors can add another to-do to their travel itinerary with live cancan returning to Canada’s first gambling hall.
Following the re-opening of Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall with slots, table games, bar service and Big Al’s concession July 9, the Klondike Visitors Association recently announced that the popular live cancan shows will also return Aug. 7, with performances at 9 and 1 p.m.
Measures taken due to COVID-19 include reduced capacity, fewer slot machines and fewer players per gaming table.
Operated by the Klondike Visitors Association, Diamond Tooth Gerties has been sharing Klondike-period cancan entertainment and friendly charm since 1971, promising “a night at the saloon just like the original stampeders.”
During a typical season, the entertainment lineup features three different shows with Gertie and her Goldrush Girls each night.
The cast of professional singers, dancers and live musicians includes Diamond Tooth Gertie, who’ll dazzle you with her wit, charm and powerhouse vocals, and Goldrush Girls, whose high kicks, splits and colourful skirts are a spectacle.
With a staggered reopening plan, the Klondike Visitors Association hopes to add live shows to the rest of the offerings at Diamond Tooth Gerties before the end of the summer. YG/Cathie Archbould photo. © Government of Yukon
The KVA says the real Gertie Lovejoy remains a bit of Klondike Goldrush mystery.
According to the legend of Diamond Tooth Gertie, “she was a dance hall girl who later married Dawson City’s most prominent lawyer and did in fact have a diamond between her teeth.

Gerties Casino and Saloon is the most popular attraction in the community of Dawson City, Yukon we were told. Now and back in the Gold Rush Era as well. When my brother and I arrived we did not really know what to expect. Walking through the doors, we were greeted by bartenders and servers dressed in gold rush era costumes. Piano man was belting out the keys. Slot machines were singing. The hum of conversation hung in the air.

Live Shows
Everything about the Northern Canada attraction is set in the early 1900’s. On this night we were treated to some live shows with dancers and singers. We threw some dice. We placed some chips. The winnings never did come. The drinks did. So not a bad night after all.
