What is Blackjack?

Blackjack is the most played card game world wide and belongs to the family of dealer games. In this casino game, you try to beat the house dealer, not the other players. It is played by one or more players and a dealer. One or more decks of 52 cards can be used. The appeal comes from its the simplicity and easy ruleset. This is why Blackjack is often the first card game a new player learns!

The history of real money Blackjack

It is said that the origins of Blackjack reach back to the Romans, but approved information put the first games around 1700. It was played in France with the name “Vingt-Et-Un”, which simply translates to Twenty One.

That time already witnessed several variations of the dealer game, which came over to America, to places such as Atlantic city in the 18th century where it retained its name “Twenty-One”.

How to Play Blackjack Online

Playing Blackjack online at an NetEnt Online Casino is identical to playing it at a land-based one. There are however, several other features, including many variations that are available to players. If you are not sure about the rules, it is always helpful to contact the customer support of the gambling platform you play on.

Place a Bet

You will find it easy to use the game options as NetEnt has added several amazing features to improve the gameplay. You will be able to re-bet, double up your bet or choose an entirely different betting value with ease.

Since online Blackjack is a table game, NetEnt has provided every player with virtual gaming chips that you can place directly on the table.

Hit, Double Up, Stand, Split

Hit is used to ask for another card after the face up card was dealt, and it is the most common option for a new hand.

Stand is used to hold your total face value and stop your turn when you believe your hand will not exceed 21. The total of your hand total value represents you against the dealer and if it is below 21, you win. In some versions you can use an insurance button if you think the dealer´s hand will reach Blackjack as well.

Double up is another thrilling move on blackjack casino games that is used when players need an additional face up card in order to make their hand a strong value. When used, it adds a card to your hand and increases your bet value and winning chance by 100%. Using this option, you will not be given additional cards by the dealer. When betting real money you should make sure that your hand volume is still suitable.

Splitting is another option on Blackjack that can only be used when you have two cards with the same value. You can decide to split the two cards into two different hands, which will also double your bet value, but you will have a chance to win on each of the two cards.

The Standard Rules of Online Blackjack

Since NetEnt’s variations are similar to the actual land based versions of the game, there are some rules that players have to follow. These rules also involve the value each card has. The Ace card can have a hand value of 1 or 11, the cards 2 to 9 have values equal to their number while the jack, queen and king card count as a value of 10.

When your face up cards include an Ace, it is valued as 1 because of the values of the other cards in your hand, this is referred to as a “hard hand”. A “soft hand”, however, means that your hand has an ace and it can be either valued for 1 or 11.

Anytime you are dealt with face cards of an ace and any other card that has a value of 10, it is immediately regarded as Blackjack and it surpasses any other combination of cards that can add up to 21. Depending on your bet choice, you can play blackjack on a single deck, or as a multi hand version with all the 8 decks having 52 cards each.

Basic Strategy of Online Blackjack

Playing Blackjack involves a perfect combination of luck and strategy. While you cannot control the luck factor, you can always improve your Blackjack strategy to increase your probability of winning. One of the best strategies you can use to improve your gambling is to familiarize yourself with the different kinds of hands used in the game. When the game deals you a hand, it can be one of the 340 possible combinations of cards from the deck. Thus, you need to react quickly with your blackjack strategy on how to play your cards in the most successful way possible.

Blackjack Online Variations

There are several variations of virtual and live dealer blackjack games at NetEnt approved casinos. These feature several awesome features such as the different camera angles that give players the authentic feeling of being at a real table. Additionally, the live dealer blackjack offers the player more added features including HD real-time video that shows all the details of the blackjack table with the cards while also offering a plethora of merits like the standard game.

Play Free Online Blackjack

To make it easier for players to get comfortable and fully grasp the intricacies of the game, NetEnt provides online Blackjack for free, and it does not require you to bet your real cash for cards like you'd have too at an online casino.

This is the perfect option for a new player to familiarize themselves with this dealer game, to understand how Blackjack works and how to bet effectively.

To play free online blackjack from NetEnt, you are not required to download any Blackjack apps or register, and it offers you the same level of entertainment. You can play all our blackjack variations including the live games on your mobile device or computer. With the mobile platform, players will be able to take advantage of all the game features and variants in the same way as on your desktop computer or laptop.

10 cards are removed from the deck, leaving 48 cards in total. Extra payouts are awarded for achieving combinations such as a 7 card 21.

Similar to Spanish blackjack in that the 10's are removed from the deck. The dealers second card isn't revealed until the end of the round and ace counts as 1 in a pre-double hand.

Doubling down can be done with both cards and the dealer must check blackjack prior to a player taking their turn, if an ace or a 10-point card is revealed.

Blackjack Playing Guide

If you've never played online blackjack before then it may seem wildly different to any other casino card game you've played before. Follow our simple step by step guide to get started and you'll be beating the dealer in no time!

  1. Join a table and place your bet. The dealer will give you a limited time in which to do this.

  2. Once the game starts all bets are final. Just like in a real casino the dealer will deal cards to you one by one.

  3. It's then up to you to decide whether to stick with your hand, or hit for another card.

  4. Whoever scores 21 or closest between you and the dealer (without going over) is the winner.

The Benefits of Live Dealer

Live Blackjack Betting Basics And Tips

Live dealer blackjack is, for the most part, very much the same game as standard online blackjack, only it tends to run at a slower pace. Between waiting for the dealer to draw physical cards and waiting for other players to make their move, the speed of this game has much more in common with blackjack in a land-based casino.

Remember, unlike in standard blackjack, you're no longer in total control and the moves you make will probably depend on what other players at the table have been doing. For example, if four face cards have recently been drawn by other players and you're looking for 9 or lower, your odds of going bust aren't so bad if you decide to hit. Equally, if other players at the table have drawn low card after low card, you might want to reconsider hitting if 9 or more will bust you.

It can be tempting to bet big when you see other players at the table doing so successfully but we recommend that you stick with the bet level you started playing at - you don't want to burn through your bankroll because you're trying too hard to keep up with the Joneses.

Live Blackjack Versus Virtual Casino Blackjack

Well, the obvious difference is the live element. Being able to watch a live stream of a real dealer, interacting with you in real-time is the closest virtual gaming has come to being able to replicate the experience of playing in a physical casino. The overall appearance of the live gaming versus the computer generated games is also a lot more sophisticated. For more live casino games, check out our list of other live dealer casinos available online.

Start Your Game

Originally conceived as a game to answer sceptics who didn't believe a fair game could be guaranteed when playing online, live blackjack - which is much more difficult for casinos to cheat at because it uses real cards - has since become a very popular game in its own right. If you can't make it to an offline casino this is about as close as you'll get to the experience playing at home, and there's a lot to recommend doing just that! To give live blackjack a try for yourself, just check out any of the casinos that we recommend on this page and you'll be playing in a matter of minutes.

Tip No. 1: Learn Basic Blackjack Strategy

One of the many reasons for the popularity of Blackjack online and off is that it relies heavily on the skill of the players. It’s not like Roulette or slots, where you have to have luck on your side, and the decisions you make during the game will have a huge impact on its outcome.

Gifted mathematicians have created a scheme that tells you how to play to your best advantage whatever combination of cards you’re dealing with. It’s called Basic Online Blackjack Strategy and you’d be a fool not to learn it before you get to the table! Once you’ve got the basic tenets memorised, you’ll be fine, since they’ll apply to most variations with just some minor tweaks.

The Strategy was first created by generating computer simulations of millions of possible card combinations, initially by Julian Braun of IBM. It’s gone on to be used the world over by savvy online blackjack players who are in it for the sheer enjoyment of playing as well as making healthy returns when they do!

Online blackjack already has a very low house-edge, another reason so many players adore it, at just 0.5%. But if you implement Basic Strategy, you can bring this down to an astonishing 1%. Bet that got your attention! And thanks to the very same technology that lets you try to beat the dealer to 21 on your smartphone, tablet, or desktop, it’s easy for you to get hold of. A simple online blackjack site search will bring it up and you can then spend some time getting to know it. Naturally, as your experience increases, you will need to use it less and less as you internalise the best moves and start to use them instinctively with your games of blackjack in Canada.

Using Specific Online Blackjack Strategy Cards

Another great aspect of playing online blackjack instead of at land-based casinos is that there’s no one to stop you using an actual Basic Strategy card when you need to. It’s by no means illegal to use them, and we suggest you study them beforehand, so you know how to find what you’re looking for quickly when diving into your games of Canadian blackjack..

You could even make this part of a relaxing ritual when you get home, organising snacks, something to drink, and your printed card next to whatever device you’re going to be playing online blackjack on.

Do top quality online blackjack games, generous payouts and enticing cash bonuses in Canada sound like your idea of a good time? Then don’t hesitate! Check out our range of top-rated Canadian blackjack online casinos to find your perfect casino match today!

History of Blackjack

The history of blackjack is a largely contested subject that many researchers still to this day disagree on. Unlike other games, there is no one creator of blackjack and instead it has progressed from other games.

The modern game that we know now as blackjack is thought to have originated and developed from games played in France and Spain during the 18 th century. It was originally named “Vingt-un” or “Vingt-et-un (meaning 21) in France, but in Spain it was known as “Trente-un” (meaning 31), which can be traced back as far 1440.

Blackjack, then known as ‘21’, was taken over to America by French Colonists in the 18 th century where the rules were not standardized and often changed depending on the individual dealers. The game flourished and increased in popularity in America through the development of gambling establishments.

At the time of the state legislation of gambling in Nevada in 1931, the game was still just as popular and had continued to be referred to as ‘21’. Some casinos targeted this game as a way to entice more players and would sometimes offer an exclusive payout of 10:1 when a player successfully got to 21 points by using the ace of spades card and one of the black jacks. This is where the name Blackjack was established and grew from.

Online Blackjack Games, How to Play Blackjack in Canada

As states in America were starting to legalize gambling, legislation was introduced, and games needed to have a standardized set of rules. Up until this point, blackjack did not have a clear set of rules and was played differently depending on the players’ location or the individual dealer. However, the Nevada Gaming Commission created the official rules for blackjack, and those are the rules that the modern version of the game follows today. Blackjack has since been one of the most popular games to be played in casinos in Las Vegas, and the rest of the world.

The game of blackjack developed further when technological advancements enabled the establishment of online casinos, which provided the classic version of blackjack virtually. The game of blackjack developed further through the growth of the internet and there are now different versions that are played interactively.

Blackjack Odds

One of the key things to understand when playing blackjack is the odds and probabilities that exist in the game. Regardless of the cards you have been dealt and what your predicament is at the table (whether literal or virtual) you need to be aware of the chances you have of winning, compared to the probability that you will go bust.

How do I win at Blackjack?

Through studying and practicing the game, you will be able to work out the probability of going bust when you decide to add an extra card to your already dealt hand value. For example, if your hand value is 12, then you have a 31% probability of an extra card value sending you bust and out the game.

However, if you have a higher hand value at 19, then your probability jumps up to an 85% chance. Once you get your head around these odds, then it will be easier to assess whether you should take the risk of adding an extra card. Putting it simply, the higher your hand value, the higher the risk an extra card will make you go bust. It is worth keeping this equation in your head while you are playing.

However, the real trick to blackjack is to not just focus on your odds in the game, but also on the dealer. Now you need to remember that the dealer’s probability depends on what the game’s rules state. So, make sure you know the rules before you enter play.

You may think that you have been dealt a weak hand, but also look at the odds of the dealer’s hand being weak as well and you will have a better idea of how to predict their hand successfully.

Example: you could have the hand value of 12 and assume that the right thing to do would be to hit. You would consider this to be true because not only is 12 a low hand value, but you know that more than two thirds of the rest of the pack that you could be dealt from would help improve your value.

But don’t forget that the dealer may have a weak hand too! Do not make the common mistake of only focusing on your own odds and probabilities.

Online Blackjack Rules for Canadians

Blackjack is one of the most popular games played in casinos and this is because, while being relatively simple, it offers a thrill and the player can use mathematical ability (through the assessing of odds) in order to develop a high-level strategy. Before you can develop a high strategy, you need to first know the basic game rules.

How do I start?

The standard 52 card pack is used for blackjack and most casinos play the popular version where six packs are shuffled together (to make for 312 cards in total). However, not all these cards will be played as after the cards have been shuffled and bets placed, the dealer will pick a player at random to cut the pack of cards so that the last 60/70 cards will not be in play.

How does the game work?

The object of the game is to beat the dealer by getting as close to the count of 21, without going over (known as going bust). The betting aspect comes to the game as, before the cards are dealt, each player places a bet by placing a chip in the designated area. The value of the chip(s) you place down is up to you, but there are generally minimum and maximum bet limits that start from around $2 to $500, but this depends on the betting establishments rules.

When the first cards are dealt, the dealer will give each player one card facing upwards, and then give himself one card facing up. The second round of cards are delivered to players face up, while the dealer’s second card is placed face down.

Playing from the left, each player must decide whether they want to stand or hit. This means that a player can either stick with the original two cards that they have been dealt, or they can decide to have additional cards from the dealer. The player will then either stand if they have a hand value of 21 or under or go bust if they exceed the 21 goal. If the player loses by going over the value of 21, then the dealer collects the bet they wagered.

The dealer serves all the players in the same way and once this has been done, they will turn the down facing card up so the table can see his total. If the total of his two cards is more than 17, then the dealer must stand. However, if the total is under 17, then the dealer will continue to take cards until a value of 17 is reached.

Online Blackjack Strategies and Tips in Canada

Look at The Dealer's Card

There are different strategies that are followed, but one of the main ones that nearly all players begin with is based on the dealer’s up facing card. If you can see that the dealer’s card is a high value (for example between 7 and 10) then the player should take additional cards until their value is at least 17. The main strategy behind this, and the whole game, is to not take an extra card if there is any risk that it could make you go bust.

Splitting Pairs

A popular strategy is the use of blackjack pair splitting. If a player is dealt two cards of the same value, then they can decide to either continue playing with those card values, or they can split them into two playable hands. Now, a player getting two cards of the same value can be beneficial as well as damaging.

For example, if two 10s are dealt to a player, then they have a strong hand they will want to stand with. However, being dealt two ‘2s’ can be less beneficial and the player may indicate to the dealer that they want to split the pair into two hands but place another equal bet by the original bet they placed.

But make sure that you place the second bet NEXT to the original bet and not on top of it! The player should also remember that they must play out the original hand they were dealt before they can play their split (second) hand.

Side Bets

Some games will see the inclusion of side bets. These are additional wagers that can be placed only at the beginning of the game when you play your main bets. Side bets can be placed on both your own hand, and the hand the other players will be dealt. The most popular side bets are perfect pairs and insurance.

However, it is advisable to avoid getting involved in side bets as they generally have a higher house edge compared to the game itself, so it really is recommended that you avoid them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blackjack Basics

Blackjack is a Card Game

The game is played on a standard 52 card deck. The suit of the cards you are given does not matter in blackjack.

Every Card Has a Numeric Value

Aces can be worth either 11 or 1 (depending on which is best for your hand), face cards (King, Queen, and Jack) are worth 10, and all other cards are worth their number.

21 is the Goal

Put simply, the goal in blackjack is to attain a card hand that totals closer to 21 than the dealer, without going over 21. If you go over 21, you “bust” and lose.

How To Play Blackjack Online

While online blackjack can intimidating, the game is actually much simpler than it seems. Here’s how it works.

As mentioned above, you are given two face-up cards to start. The dealer gives themselves one card face-up and one card face-down. Then, you have the choice to hit or stand. If you hit, you receive one more card. You can keep hitting until you choose to stand, reach 21, or go over 21 (a bust). If you stand, you stop receiving cards, and it’s the dealer’s turn to turn over their face-down card and reveal their total.

The dealer has to keep hitting until their cards total 17. Whoever’s hand total is closest to 21 without going over, wins. If either of you go over 21, you bust and lose immediately. Getting 21, or a blackjack, isn’t an automatic win: there’s the chance you and the dealer will both reach 21, in which case you would tie.

An Example Hand of Blackjack

  • The player makes a bet.

  • The player receives cards from the dealer – a Queen and a 4. The dealer also has two cards, but only one – an 8 – is visible to the player.

  • The player adds up their cards and realizes that their total is only 14. They decide to hit and take another card – a 6.

  • Satisfied with their total of 20, the player stands.

  • The dealer reveals their other card – an Ace – bringing the total of their hand to 19.

  • Since the player’s total is closer to, but not exceeding 21, they win the round.

How To Win at Blackjack

Manage Your Bankroll

This bears repeating for all types of online gambling – have a bankroll strategy and stick to it. In blackjack, we recommend ensuring that each individual bet represents – at most, 5% of your total bankroll. For example, if you have $100 to play with, we recommend playing $5 hands at most.

Never Chase Losses

Blackjack in particular is a game of math. If you play wisely and follow sound strategy, you will gain the edge over the long term. Do not play recklessly and emotionally, and never abandon your blackjack strategy to win back anything you’ve lost.

Capitalize on Good Hands

Use splitting and doubling down to maximize your wager amount on good hands. In online blackjack, being aggressive is required at times. If one more ten would give you a winning hand, take a calculated risk and double down.

When to Hit, Stand, Double Down, or Split

After the bets are placed and each player has received their two initial cards, you’ll have to choose whether you want to hit, stand, double down, or split. You’ll want to make this decision based on what’s in your hand, and what’s showing in the dealer’s hand.

When to Hit in Blackjack

A “hit” is simply asking for another card from the dealer

Depending on what the dealer is showing and the casino’s rules, a general strategy would be to ‘hit’ when your cards total 14 or less.

For example: if your cards total 12, it would be a good idea to hit. There’s a good chance of you getting a card under 10, so you probably won’t bust.

When to Stand in Blackjack

“Standing” is choosing to receive no more cards from the dealer

A player would “stand” when they’re confident they have a high enough hand to beat the dealer, typically on hands that total 15 or more (depending on what the dealer is showing).

For example: If your cards total 17, you could definitely still choose to hit, but now there’s a greater chance of you getting a card that would put you over 21. Depending on what the dealer is showing in this scenario, it may be wiser to stand.

When to Double Down in Blackjack

“Doubling down” is choosing to double your original bet and committing to receiving only one more card from the dealer

As an example, a player should generally “double down” if their hand totals 10 or 11, as the odds of the next card being a ten or face card is in the player’s favor in the long run. Again, this will depend on what the dealer is showing as well as the casino’s dealer rules.

Remember – doubling down doubles a player’s bet, and they only get one more card. If the player gets a good card and wins, they win double, but if they get a bad card and lose, they’ll lose double.

When to Split in Blackjack

A “split” is only an option when a player is dealt a pair

“Splitting” a pair turns the original pair into two separate hands, doubling the amount of hands the player has on the table and doubling the bet in the process.

For example, if a player was dealt two 8s, they could split these. They would then have two hands worth 8 each, and receive an additional card for each hand. They’d then play these hands the same way they’d play one – choosing to hit, stand, double down, or even to split again.

Choosing when to split is a bit complicated, and depends on which pair you receive, and what the dealer’s showing. When you’re choosing to split, remember these three things:

  • Don’t split a winning hand. If you’re dealt two 10s, it’s tempting to double down, but don’t. If you’re dealt two 10s, you know you have twenty, which is likely a winning total. Hold tight.

  • Only split good cards. Remember, you’re turning these cards into new hands, so only split cards that you actually For example, if you’re dealt a pair of fours (a low, mathematically unfriendly card) there’s no point in splitting – you’ll just end up with extra hands full of fours.

  • Each time you split, your wager doubles. Just try to remember what you’re getting into – splitting doubles your potential winnings, but also your potential losses.

Online Blackjack Payouts

When playing blackjack, it’s important to find the top casinos which offer the best payout percentages. This will help make your bankroll last longer and give you the best chance of winning.

The standard blackjack casino payout is 3 to 2. While in recent years a number of casinos have switched to a 6 to 5 payout, we recommend never playing for less than 3 to 2. This means that for every $2 bet, the player would receive $3 back on a winning hand – 1.5x the initial wager.

Traditionally, blackjack is the casino game with the highest overall payout percentage and the lowest house edge. While this varies across casinos, blackjack variations and individual games, by using a good strategy and choosing a game with favourable rules, you can find online blackjack games with a tiny (

Different Types of Online Blackjack

When you decide to play blackjack online, you have a host of options when it comes to the different variations of the game. Here are a few of the most popular options for Canadian players, but rest assured, there are plenty of other games that follow the objective of blackjack.

Spanish 21

This variation of real money online blackjack allows players late surrenders, doubling after a split, re-splitting aces, players 21 always wins, players blackjack beats dealer blackjack, a player may double down on any number of cards. There are also different payouts when a player hits 21. Whether it’s 5,6,7 card 21’s or three-suited 7’s.

Live Dealer Blackjack

In this popular Blackjack variation, players can enjoy a traditional casino experience while playing online as there is a live dealer in real-time dealing the cards. Live blackjack is a great option for players that want the live casino experience with the convenience of playing from their laptop or mobile device.

European Blackjack

European blackjack is a popular variation with minor differences from traditional real money blackjack. One central difference is it only played with two decks of cards, where others use six to eight decks. There’s no hole card in the European variation of the game and the dealer doesn’t receive a second card until the player has completed their hand. Doubling down is also limited. In European blackjack, players can only double down if they have a hand of 9 through 11.

Single Deck Blackjack

This version of blackjack is only played with one deck. For years, single deck was the standard, but casinos began to mix in multiple decks to make card counting more difficult.

Free Blackjack vs. Blackjack for Real Money

Most casinos offer a demo mode where you can play a selection of their games for free. This allows you to learn the rules, test your strategy and see how you like the casino before making a deposit. We recommend playing in demo mode until you understand how the game works. Of course, the inescapable downside of playing for free is that you can’t win money, and that bonuses and promotions for free players are incredibly rare. That’s why, once comfortable, many players choose to play for real money. Blackjack is a great game whichever way you play, but check out the pros and cons of playing for real money to make sure you make the right decision.

Pros of Real Money Blackjack

  • Chance to win real money which can be cashed out

  • Increased level of excitement and entertainment

  • Ability to collect free casino bonuses

  • Huge variety of blackjack variations and game designs available

  • Live dealer tables are almost always exclusively for real money players

Cons of Real Money Blackjack

  • As with all real money games, there is a risk that you may lose money

  • You’ll have to register at a casino before you start playing

Blackjack Glossary Terms

Blackjack

This is the name of the game, and what it is called when your hand reaches a total of 21. When you get a blackjack, you win, unless the dealer also gets a blackjack (in which case, it’s a “Push” or a tie).

When your card total exceeds 21, you “Bust”, which means you lose that hand and your bet. A bust can only happen if you choose to “Hit” after you have received your initial two cards. If the player and the dealer both bust, the player loses.

Double Down

After your first two cards are dealt, if you think you just need one more card to win, you can double your bet. Sometimes this is offered on split hands.

Even Money

This is Blackjack-specific insurance. If you have a blackjack and the dealer is showing an ace, you can ask for even money, which is a 1:1 payout.

First Base

The player to the dealer’s immediate left if at first base. They get their cards first and will be the first to act, unless they are playing in a tournament.

Five Card Charlie

When a player has five cards in front of them and still hasn’t busted.

Add a card to your hand. After you have been dealt your first two cards, you can choose to “hit” and get another face-up card. You can do this until you choose to stand or until you hit 21 or go over (a “bust”).

Hole Card

The card that is left face-down (the dealer’s second card). Whenever you decide to stand, the hole card will be revealed.

House Edge

The mathematical advantage that the casino has over you. This is to ensure that the casino makes a profit over time. The house edge varies per game and per casino.

Insurance

When the dealer has an ace, you can purchase insurance. Players can win back some of their bet if the dealer wins by getting a blackjack. This is usually offered in American Blackjack.

A hand with two cards of the same value (ie. two 10s). Pairs can be split if you wish.

When you and the dealer have the same hand value, your bet is returned and you don’t win or lose anything.

Side Bet/Proposition Bet

A.K.A. a prop bet. When you make a wager based on something else happening in the game that isn’t necessarily a part of Blackjack.

Soft Hand

When your hand contains an ace that can be used as a one or an 11.

Split

If you’re dealt two cards of the same value, you can choose to split your cards and play with two hands. You place your bet on each hand.

Stand

Don’t take any more cards. Only do this if you think you have a better hand than the dealer.

Surrender

If you feel like the game isn’t going very well and you don’t have a good chance of winning, you can choose to surrender. If you do, you get half of your bet back.

Upcard

The dealer’s first card that is dealt face-up.

Blackjack Online FAQs

Blackjack is both the name of the game, and the name of a winning hand. If any player – you or the dealer – receives an Ace and a ten-value card (i.e. a ten or a face card) as your initial two cards, this is called a blackjack. In this instance, the player dealt the blackjack automatically wins this hand.

If your cards add up to more than 21, this is called a ‘bust’, and means you lose that hand and your bet.

If, once you and the dealer are done taking cards, you have a higher hand than the dealer and you didn’t go over 21, you win! Typically, you earn back your original wager, plus that same amount again. For example, if you wager $10 and win, you’ll be paid $20.

If, once you and the dealer are done taking cards, you end up with the same total, this is called a “push”. This is essentially a tie, and your original wager will be returned to you.

The best way to begin playing blackjack is to find free online blackjack games and practice using the online platform. There is a detailed blackjack overview on this page and a great strategy sheet that will help even the most novice player learn the basic strategies.

The best way to win at blackjack online is to follow a betting chart. The odds are always going to favor the online casino, but by playing with a sound strategy, you can lower that limit less than one percent.

No, plenty of casinos make their games available to play free online blackjack. This is a great way for new players to get introduced to gambling and the online platform. For experienced online blackjack players, this allows players to experiment with betting strategies and playing techniques without risking any real money.

This depends on the online casino a user chooses to play with. Most online casinos don’t require any software to be downloaded to play on their site. Some will require players to download their mobile casino to play if the player wants to use a tablet or mobile smartphone.

No, you cannot count cards playing blackjack online because online casinos use a random number generator to deal cards. This system means every hand is being played with a new deck. A user could count cards, but there would be no value in doing so.

Not at any of the online casinos we recommend at Gamble Online. Blackjack (as with all casino games) has a mathematical percentage that favors the house, although the payout percentage varies by the skill level of the blackjack participant. Blackjack games at online casinos use random number generators (RNGs) to ensure games are fair.

Online Live Dealer Blackjack in Canada

Live dealer blackjack is available at most of the casinos we recommend. It’s one of the most popular casino card games because the results are down to more than luck – players need skill and discipline in order to win consistently.

The differences between live dealer and random number generator blackjack are mostly in the experience itself, rather than the rules or odds. To learn more about the online animated game please see our guide to Play Online Blackjack.

Just like in-casino and animated online games, you’ll find variations on themes, rules, and even deck counts within the offering of any single provider. Not all providers use the same rule set for any particular game, either, so it’s a good idea to check the rules and consult a good calculator to know your odds and the best strategy.

The most popular providers in Canada are:

  • Evolution Gaming

  • Extreme Live Gaming (Novomatic)

  • Ezugi

  • LuckyStreak

  • Microgaming

  • Playtech

Some allow banter between other players, the dealer, or both. The dealer will usually speak out loud, while your interaction will be in a chat box. Some VIP games allow one-on-one conversations with the dealer.

Many games will let you ‘bet behind’ a winning player – placing your stake on their bets – this is a good option if you want to fine-tune your betting strategy by following an accomplished bettor.

Whilst most RNG tables have 1, 3, or even 5 seats, the most common table configuration for live dealer games is 7 seats. If more than one seat is open, many providers let you take two spots if you like. If the table is full you’ll either need to find another table, wait your turn, or bet behind.

VIP players may wish to find a private table for one on one action with the dealer. Low stakes private tables are hard to find from decent providers. 888 and Unibet are good choices for privé play – each offers more than 20 tables for VIP players. Not all VIP games are single seat. LeoVegas’s Chambre Séparée is a notable exception – available in single and seven-seat configurations.

In addition to the table talk and seeing the cards being shuffled and dealt, another major difference in live dealer blackjack is the speed of the game. Expect the pace of each round to be much slower than you may be used to online – and much closer to the more relaxed rate of play you’ll find at most land casinos.

We’ve shortlisted the top five Canadian Live Dealer casinos, and for the most part, the ranking remains the same for the game of blackjack specifically.

We’ll add live casino bonus and promotion frequency to the criteria for blackjack and that moves 888Casino from the third position to #2, switching places with Mr Green for the runner-up spot.

LeoVegas still clocks in at number one with frequent promos, multiple providers and game variants, fresh games & new streams, as well as a longstanding focus on mobile gaming.

While we can suggest criteria for ranking online Canadian casinos based on their live dealer offerings, the nuances involved in choosing a favorite provider are down to individual players.

Some things to consider:

Check your internet connection. A quick and easy way to see your bandwidth can be found at Fast.com

  1. Navigate to your favorite casino’s Live tab – You will need to be logged in with a real money account to see most live dealer suites

  3. Choose your table limits – The minimum bet is usually $5 per hand, but some offerings range from $1 to $1,000 as a minimum

  4. Locate the options menu and adjust video quality if needed – most platforms will adjust automatically for sporadic or slow connections

  8. Be ready to act when the dealer gets around to you. This will keep the game flowing nicely for all players

Are there any good strategies for live dealer blackjack?

Basic and advanced strategies are needed to win more often. There are no systems that will guarantee a win, but a strategy is required in a land casino, while playing an animated game, and when playing at a live dealer casino.

If you’d like to test your basic blackjack strategy, take this illustrated 20-question quiz at blackjackinfo.com

You can also adjust the rules and use the original Blackjack Basic Strategy Engine here.

Card counting is nearly impossible and probably not worth the effort with 6, 7, or 8 decks in play. The cards are shuffled too often, and you probably don’t want to delay the game for other players. While bonuses are not likely to defeat the house edge either, they are more likely to give you a leg up than card counting will.

Mobile Play

Advanced streaming technology and the bandwidth to handle it have made the online live dealer blackjack experience evolve from “barely worth the effort” just a few years ago, to well worth the time in recent years.

The same can be said of mobile gaming. All of the studios and casino streams listed here offer tablet and smartphone players fully optimized games. Many can stream without lag or delay over a 3G connection and all will deliver a seamless game on 4G or better.

Android, Apple, Windows, and BlackBerry users can play the same uninterrupted games as desktop users on WiFi or hard-wired to the internet.

Evolution has been streaming in HTML5 since at least 2012 and as Flash is phased out over the next couple of years, all providers will be switching to the futureproof HTML technology for browser play.

Playing Online Blackjack in Canada

Blackjack is one of the simplest online casino games that Canadian players can choose to play. Many people in Canada already have a good idea of how the game works, so we do not really need to introduce the game to you on any sort of in-depth level. However, you may not have played online blackjack before, and there are many different variants you can choose to play at Canada’s top online casinos. If you are wondering which the best variants are to play, and what top Canadian online casinos should offer you when it comes to playing blackjack online, you have come to the right page. Read our guide to online blackjack in Canada to find out more.

Why Do Canadians Like to Play Blackjack?

Online Blackjack Games, How to Play Blackjack in Canada

Canadians like to play blackjack mainly for the same reasons that everybody else does. Blackjack is one of the simplest gambling games that you can play with cards. The odds are good that you already know how it works, too. Even if you do not, you can consult our how to play guide to get started with blackjack today.

Blackjack can be considered a game of chance, and as such, it does not require much skill to play. In fact, most of the time (if you stick to Basic Strategy) it is down to luck whether you win or not. That said, there are certainly some things that you can do to improve your chances of success, and we aim to cover some of those with this guide.

Can Canadians Play Live Dealer and Mobile Blackjack Games?

Online Blackjack Games, How to Play Blackjack in Canada

Canadian players are not limited to basic RNG (random number generator) blackjack games. While these table games are undoubtedly possible at Canadian online casinos, you will also have access to live dealer blackjack games as well as mobile blackjack games. In some cases, you may find that live blackjack games are also mobile-friendly to boot. In short, no matter what type of online blackjack game you wish to play, you will be able to find a host of different titles available at any reputable Canadian online casino.

Which Online Blackjack Games Can Canadians Play?

Online Blackjack Games, How to Play Blackjack in Canada

Canadians are somewhat fortunate in that they do not suffer from many licensing restrictions. Casinos in some countries can only provide their players with games from a handful of providers, as those developers are not licensed in the same region as the casino. That is not going to be an issue with online casinos in Canada, as the country recognises most gambling licenses from all over the world.

What this all means is that Canadians can play games from seemingly every major provider. These developers include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Microgaming

  • NetEnt

  • Evolution Gaming

  • Pragmatic Play

  • BetSoft Gaming

  • Ezugi

  • Playtech

  • Real Time Gaming (RNG)

  • Rival Gaming

  • and more

Not every casino software provider develops table games or live dealer games. However, Canadians can rest assured that if a software developer has produced a blackjack table game or a live dealer title, and your Canadian casino offers titles from this provider, you will be able to play it in Canada.

Playable Blackjack Games at Canada’s Best Online Casinos

Online Blackjack Games, How to Play Blackjack in Canada

Because Canadians have access to virtually all major online blackjack games, the choices before them are near limitless. Canadian casinos offer a staggering selection of online blackjack games, ranging from simple Classic Blackjack to more bizarre titles such as Blackjack Switch. Here are a few of the main blackjack games that you may wish to have a look at when playing at top Canadian online casinos:

  • Blackjack Switch: This online blackjack game allows you to switch cards between multiple hands. However, the dealer can push if they have a 22-point hand because of this good fortune.

  • Pontoon: Pontoon is like blackjack but more popular in the UK and Canada. Players must hit to 15 and can win with a Pontoon (ace and face), pocketing a 2:1 prize as they go. The dealer only moves after the player has completed their actions, and a Five-Card Trick (a hand of 21 or less with five cards) beats every hand save for Pontoon. In this game, the dealer will regrettably win all ties.

  • Double Exposure: Canadians will get to see both the dealer’s cards in this variant. However, Blackjack only pays out at 1:1, and the dealer wins all ties (apart from blackjack, which is pushed) as a result.

  • Super Fun 21: This blackjack variant uses a single deck of cards (at most two) and allows you quite a degree of flexibility when it comes to doubling down, splitting, or re-splitting. You can also surrender. Expect winnings of 1:1 for blackjack unless you have an ace and face of diamonds when you can win at a rate of 2:1.

  • Classic Blackjack: This basic blackjack game is played with a single deck of cards and is something known as Single Deck Blackjack as a result.

  • Atlantic City Blackjack: Popularised by casinos in New Jersey, this game uses eight decks of cards and the dealer will win with blackjack unless you can tie the game up. Some insurance bets (in some variants) can pay out at 6:5 in this game.

  • Vegas Strip Blackjack: This blackjack variant was popularised in Vegas and uses four decks of cards. You can only split 10-point cards, but split aces will not count as blackjack in this game.

  • Live Blackjack: Live blackjack is not one variant, but several. It could consist of any number of blackjack games, but the defining feature is that the game is played over an HD video stream with a live human dealer. Only some software providers offer live blackjack games to players at Canadian online casinos.

Of course, the actual number of online blackjack games that you can play at Canadian casinos is considerably more extensive than this. You can find a wider variety of games once you choose one of our recommended casinos to play at today. Of all the blackjack games out there, though, which ones offer Canadians the best chance of success? Let us look at that in the next section.
